Wifi with prism2.device and encryption
« on: February 27, 2010, 03:33:28 PM »
Hello.

Prism2.device is a great peace of software bringing wifi to old miggies.
My 1200 was used to connect on my wifi network, with the keyword for WEP in user-startup.
However, no one use anymore WEP for security matters and WPA has become the standard.
Do you know if there is any way to add WPA support?
Prism2 has not been updated since 1998.

Thanks.

There is no way to add it.

Unless if you're a coder with considerable network coding experience and have ton of spare time, that is.

You mean it's not updated since 2008 ?!
http://aminet.net/driver/net/prism2.lha

IMHO there's no driver that currently supports wpa and newer, even on OS4.0+

Yes i meant 2008. When it comes to amiga, i always feel back to the 90's :D

Bad luck for WPA. So it is WEP and network possibly cracked within 15 minutes by any bad geek passing by, or no WIFI at all for miggies :-/

If you can't get an ethernet cable to your Miggy, then you could use plug in powerline ethernet sockets to extend ethernet to the right place. I use them for my home automation computers, but they would work equally well with a Miggy. Take a look on ebay for "comtrend powerline adapter".

Wifi ? Turn it off ! Get your Miggy an RJ45 ethernet card :)

What's it called? ddWRT, maybe? Been a while since I did this. It's new firmware for Linksys routers that lets you use them as a bridge device. IE, plug your Amiga into router, router connects wirelessly to your "main" wireless router, and, like magic, your Amiga has "wireless". And on the software side, it's just like configuring a wired connection. The router takes care of all the encryption.

And I should add that this is cheaper than buying a dedicated bridge and hanging a hub/switch off of it.

Sure, those two solutions are good replacement.

You mean in three minutes or less?

3-Minute WEP Crack
http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/unwired/3minute-wep-crack-6140

(The link to the original article does not work, but the excerpt is there. There are better articles out there, though.)

IIRC, WPA can be cracked in a relatively short amount of time now, too, and WPA2 is currently the most hardened encryption.

Now, something you can do is use a firmware which allows for multiple SSIDs.  I use DD-WRT on a WAP54G, and this feature works, but apparently does not work well multiple encryption types, even though you can configure them.  It is security by obscurity, but you could set up a hidden SSID running WEP secondary (or beyond) to your primary SSID running WPA2.

This configuration did work to allow me to use WPA2-AES as my primary SSID, with WPA-TKIP as a secondary to allow my LifeDrive to connect.

Aside from spare time and programming skills, I understand that WPA and WPA2 are pretty processor intensive, so it would seriously bog down our 68k Amigas.  Unless the encryption is offloaded to the card, but such cards would be CardBus and not compatible with the Amiga, anyway.

Although, PCI cards might work.  I would love to see an adapter to allow a Mini-PCI device to attach to the PCI bus on the Picasso IV or the CyberStorm.

Sorry to change the subject a bit, but I am dying for Wifi on my Amiga.  I see a Prism2.5 card for sale.  Will this work with the driver which is available for the Amiga?  My Amiga is just my hobby PC I do nothing on it but play, so I am not worried about someone cracking my network.  Why would I be anyway?  My other machines are Macs and I have never had any problem with someone hijacking my machine.
Thanks.

The problem arise when someone uses your connection for criminal activities, and you get blamed.

I also use a WAP54G, they're really cheap now and work well. Security is no problem as it supports AES encryption. TKIP is probably "good enough" with a strong key, it can be cracked but doubtfully by someone in your apartment complex. ;-) Matt_H's idea is even better IMHO.

I get around 920kB/s between my Amiga and PC, PC is wireless and the Amiga sits behind the WAP which is in wireless client mode. The stock firmware on my unit has a few bugs (AES must be selected under WPA, if selected under WPA2 it does nothing, and there's no telnet access), but overall it works OK. I haven't got around to trying another firmware yet, but run Tomato on my router (old WRT54GL) and really like it.

Hi,

Just my 2 cents, in regard to WPA being 'cracked' this is only possible currently using a dictionary, so the best way around this is to not use a dictionary based word or variant thereof for your passphrase. Also the fact that  WPA is broken (like WEP is) is not strictly true as

1. You have to be using TKIP.
2. You AP has to have WMM support enabled.

Have a look at the aircrack-ng forums if you are interested :-) (tkiptun-ng)

 http://www.aircrack-ng.org/

Also as a very good alternative to DD-WRT et al have a look at tomato

 Ross.
