Tell me about - AROS

Hi guys,

I have an old PC just sitting here with Win XP on and was thinking about installing AROS onto it.

Is it easy to do? maybe just put in a CD install disk like on Windows?

Or am i missing something here?

Can anyone can suggest a good starting point?

Download Icaros ISO and boot it from the CD and see if AROS has drivers for your hardware.

You can start at http://www.icarosdesktop.org/ for a complete distribution of AROS.  It's a little bit dated since there are updates almost constantly on http://aros.sourceforge.net/.  If you have any questions, I'd suggest going to the http://aros-exec.org/ forums.

Live, if you have a DVD drive, light if you only have CD drive.
VE if you like to use AROS in VmWare.

I use Aros (Icaros) on this laptop and on my netbook, it's quite easy to install. If you're starting with a blank hard drive, you boot from the Icaros Live DVD/CD and go into the Aros:Tools/ drawer and click on InstallAros. This wizard program lets you set up partition sizes, and then it will ask you to reboot. After you reboot, you should have one or two SFS partitions on your hard drive (depending on if you chose to have a Work: partition). You go back to Aros:Tools/InstallAros and go through the wizard again, this time it will find your new partitions and begin the installation process. Jump off and play with the cat for a couple of minutes, and when you come back you will have Aros installed on your PC, complete with hundreds of utilities, applications and games to try.

If you don't have a cat, maybe get a cup of tea or something. But you should still get a cat!

I have just installed aros it was no harder then xp.

So... in lieu of starting a new thread...

I burned a Live cd of Aros and played with it for a few minutes.  There are parts that seem linuxy and parts that seem miggy.  Don't know how good a wireless support it has, never bothered to try and make it work.  Those of you who run it, how does it stack up?  Say, all a fella wanted to do was surf the web, d/l email, print boring writing assignments on a decrepit HP Laserjet 5 and maybe fart around with wine.  Does it have wine?  I guess what I'm on about is is it robust enough for daily use or more of a fun novelty?

I never had the option to set up partition sizes. It makes mention of a second partition, but by default always turned my drive into one huge partition.

What am I over looking?

Also how come I see videos of UAE running smoothly without choppy sound on 1.6 Ghz machines on Youtube, yet on my 1.6 Ghz machine it is not smooth and the sound is choppy?

I just figured it might be fun to run on this old P4 since I'm pretty much done with Xp on it (bad non-updated drivers cause BSOD with SP3 and that's the only copy I have) and have just been mainly running web browser and E-UAE on this xubuntu install.  Hmm...  I might have to give it a go here soon.
