Amithlon
« on: February 21, 2010, 12:26:26 AM »
Where can one get a copy of Amithlon, as I'd really love to try it out.

I bought the Amiga Forever CD 2009 edition and would like to have a dedicated pc.

I have got an older pc that would make an ideal Amithlon PC from what I read, but can't even find it anywhere.

I am in Tasmania, Australia and hope someone here can help me out please.

From what've read, Amithlon is no longer available, due to legal reasons.

Unfortunately Amithlon was stopped due to legal disputes. The only way to get it these days unless youre lucky enough to find a 2nd hand copy is via the usual "questionable" sources on the internet.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

I bought my copy of Amithlon from old unopened stock that Software Hut had not too long ago, maybe about 2 years or so.  They might still have some still in stock Tasmanian Guy, give them a call, or write Joe an email and ask him if he has any left to sell.

It is a damn shame that the Amithlon project ran into legal problems and disputes between the two primary developers that were working on it, which brought it to an abrupt end.  It is an even bigger shame that no one has picked up the ideas contained in the Amithlon project and continued them in a new project title.

Maybe some day in the future some bright computer science student will pick up where Amithlon left off and create an even better Amiga(Like)OS that runs natively on modern hardware and retains backward compatibility with most of the Amiga apps and games, but such a project will probably never happen as it would be a huge waste of time and effort.

I hope you can find what you are looking for Tasmanian Guy, but I think you are better off with AmigaForever as it will run more of the old Amiga software than Amithlon can and runs on a wider range of hardware too.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

Why don't you use AROS for a dedicated x86 Amiga. It's classic compatible now I've read. Also it's free.
I'm going to download it in the next couple of days and get it running on my new Athlon X2 box.

I got a copy of this and tried it on 3 or 4 different computers. I wasn't able to get it going well at all.

The other thing is that amithlon dosn't work with anything that bangs the hardware (like demos and games) so I found  aforever better for my needs.

It IS a shame no one kept this going, could have been awesome.
I hope they open source it someday.

I downloaded the pre-configured VirtualBox image of AROS and it refuses to boot.

The reason Amithlon failed was due to that Burnie got burnt with the guys from Haag and Partner. So Burnie started doing Amithlon 2 which in no way had anything to do with Haag and Partner seeing it was a complete new from scratch coding. Burnie only needed to gain a licence from the Picaso V boys, but the guys from Haag scared them off with legal action if they had anything to do with the project, even though every one else supported Burnie the Picaso guys didn't want the hassles. Burnie went through hell, and finaly gave up on the project. I do know of some people who offered Burnie money so they could take over the project, but Burnie declined, and Amithlon 2 is also no more.

I have NOT tested Amithlon but run AmiKit and AmigaSYS and AmigaForever
AmiKit is the best of the three
So if you want a copy please reply to alanoreatcomcastdotnet

Yeah, drivers are big issue. Amithlon is also driver starved.

But with 1Gb (or less) RAM, a PS/2 mouse and a Video card with known drivers (for example, a Radeon 9250 PCI), a machine-equipped Amithlon will give you hours of good Amiga experience.
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

rkauer, can you post a link to a list of supported hardware? Its easy to find old video/soundboards on ebay, and I'd be willing to get a sound, network and video card that will work just to play with it...

Thanks,

Steven

I would expect that a pre-configured VirtualBox image would be, well, pre-configured and ready to go...  There is nothing special about my VirtualBox configuration (except for running on XP x64 as a host.)

More on topic, I would be interested in Amithlon if only to try out.  No legal issues, then?

Without this getting into some agro backlash, i never claimed Amithlon was dead, and it was Amithlon 2 that people wanted to buy the complete rights off Bernie so they could distribute it themselves, but he turned them down. Amithlon 2 was faster and more stable than Amithlon, i wish it had been finished, but i respect Bernie's decision.
