eternal HD drive troubles
« on: February 18, 2010, 01:32:01 AM »
I am trying to use an old Power Computing XL drive (high density) with an A2000 using a PP&S 2000/040 card with 16Mb of fast RAM and 1Mb of chip RAM. When I install the software patch this drive needs, the system will not boot. It hangs just before loading Workbench (Gives no errors however - just hangs there).
I have used this drive on my old A1200 and my old A2000 (with GVP 030 card) and it worked fine. So, I suspect it doesn't like the 040 (or Vice versa).
Has any one run into this, and made it work?
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
C-128 w/1571, 1750, & Final Cartridge III+

Sorry, I've never used a 040 Amiga before, but the HDD XL drive works fine on the A1200 with 020 and 030. I guess you could be right about the patch being incompatible with the 040. Have you tried disabling CPU caching and booting up? Or tried it on any other systems since it stopped working?

I really dunno if this is of any help, but I know the powerdrive XL software patch has problems with 060 processors. Something to do about the data cache not being cleared.

Someone wrote a patch for 060 processors. Maybe the same problem is the culprit with your 040. You can find the patch here: http://xoomer.virgilio.it/dario.manzoni2/1260software.html

Maybe it's worth it to try the patch on your system and see if it works.

When are you loading the patch? I used to run it manually, if I needed to write to HD disks, or in user-startup.

I also remember there being a few versions of HighDensityPatch kicking around. I think I had 1.4. What's yours?

@ Cammy
  I tried disabling the cache, with awful results. Right now the only other system I have is an A1000 that this drive has always refused to work with. It used to work great with my A1200...
@MozzerFan
   I will try that asap. At least it's something I can try!
@Matt_H
   There are four different versions that I am aware of, with 1.4 being the newest (that's what I am using - installed in the user-startup as the first entry (something it demands)

Thank you all. You may have kicked a couple of new ideas into my head. If I succeed I'll let you all know. This is the first time I have heard of this drive not working on any 3.1 OS system.

Here's an interesting twist - I was using what I thought was the newest patch, v1.4. BUT I just found the disk I am sure came with the last drive I bought (circa 1999) and it also has V1.4 however the install routine is totally different, and with this patch, the drive works!
Apparently we can't trust the numbers!
