If you download ADF copy, it will be most probably crack/altered version of what is it on the original disk. Overwriting and original with a crack is not a good idea. Better try to clean the disk with cloth while spinning it by hand.

I've had luck wetting the media inside the floppy with isopropyl alcohol and either spinning it by hand for a bit or running it in the drive, of course it doesn't always work but it could be worth a shot.  Sometimes if you look a the disk through the window you can see where the problem is and clean it with an alcohol-soaked cotton swab.

As for downloading it and rewriting the floppy, as a last resort and after determining the disk is still usable (good luck there) I cant imagine anything wrong with that.

I'm kind of shocked you guys have tried using alcohol on the actual magnetic media itself.  It's usually recommended for cleaning the HEADS of disk drives, audio tape players, VCRs etc., but NOT the magnetic media.  The magnetic media contains a powdered oxide which could potentially be wiped away or damaged by touching it with fluid.  Even if you did dare touch it, you'd need pure alcohol....most of the stuff you buy from the pharmacy is only about 70% alcohol (the other 30% being WATER).

Most of the errors on a disk are caused by drop outs (flaking off of the aging magnetic particles from the mylar backing of the disk) or loss of magnetic integrity/demagnetization.  I can't see how any amount of cleaning could remedy a dropout.

However, you guys have obviously had some success...so maybe all that I've come to understand about magnetic media over these past several decades needs to be re-examined.  Can anyone explain how cleaning a disk surface would actually work (I suppose if there was actually enough dirt on there to cause the head not to be able to get near the disk surface to read the data)?

Explain, no.  It is a kind-of Voo Doo, if you will.  I have been able to rescue a few disks this way, and some not.

In any case, I certainly would not over-write the original disk with a downloaded ADF.  Hold on to the original, in the hopes of future restoration methods -- I suppose the digital analogue to cryogenically freezing someone in hopes of finding a cure on day :)

The disks can get dirty/moldy/whatever, if you look at the surface you can see crap there sometimes.  Obviously cleaning the disk gently could remedy reads failed due to crap on the disk, and has worked for me on a couple of occasions.  Success rate is probably low, but I figure if the disk is screwed up anyway, it's worth a shot.

Should you use the video head/floppy drive cleaning solution? (It's fairly inert).

I've got my diskettes in a sealed box, I guess they are antiques now.

I have used this trick with some success, although i recommend making backups of the disc afterwards
My machines:
PowerMac G4 MDD 1.5ghz 1.25GB 10.5.8 & MOS 2.7
Mac Mini C2D 10.6.8 2GHz 3GB 250GB HDD
MacBook Retina 16GB 256GB SSD 10.8
iPad 2
Underground Gamer invites (a classic game site) PM

Need a part for a PC or Mac? PM me, I\'ll let you know if I come across it.

OS X trumps Windows on every level.

MorphOS, OS4 and Classic Amiga systems are the only ones who are real \'Amigas\', not that joke AROS or Amiga Forever.

I had a bunch of personal disks that didn't read properly in a real amiga so I purchased one of those catweasel cards.  The software that it comes with (PC/Windows) keeps trying to re-read the disk over and over again until it gets it successfully read.  It actually worked and now I use it all the time.  I was very thankful it saved some of my old game code from 1989!

Great tip! Though unfortunately the Catweasel doesn't work with NDOS disks, so wouldn't help the OP to recover his copy of Rainbow Islands.

@Jonas
Technically downloading an ADF is illegal. Whether or not you consider it immoral in light of the fact that you actually own a copy of the original disk is up to you, and I hardly think you're going to get Taito knocking on your door.

It's not illegal to download it. It is covered under copyright law. You are allowed to possess a back up copy.
