Amiga LCD
« on: November 15, 2003, 04:56:32 AM »
Hi - I remember reading online that some LCD monitor's may not be compatible with Amiga's. I am thinking about getting one, and wanted to know if there was anything I had to look out for.

The 2 models which appeal to me the most are the Samsung 241MP and the LG Electronics 295LM. Both of these have a tv tuner; I want to use the monitor as a tv substitute.

I like the look of the Samsung and it is a 24" monitor. The LG Electronics is a 22" monitor (and is less expensive), but it has a USB port/hub which I thought would be good for my PC (attaching both Amiga and PC and switching between them by the video source), although I am not sure if the monitor would accept both a USB video input and VGA input at the same time.

I have an Amiga 2000 with a PicassoIV - would I be able to take advantage of the 24" screen? (I also have an A1200 with BVision, but I use the A2000 more)

I was also wondering - what is the difference between my getting a LCD monitor that has a tv tuner such as the Samsung 241MP, and a LCD tv that has PC compatibility like the 32" Samsung LTN325W? Does one of them have better computer monitor resolution?

Thanks,
Roy

Hi Amiga2000,

You'll have to look for a monitor which you can connect to the VGA-port, because there are also lcd-monitors which you only can connect to a DVI-port.

About the monitor with a usb-hub, this hub isn't used for video-signals. This hub is just like any other usb-hub.

you can use a 24 inch screen, but you'll be wanting a very high resolution. I don't know if your picasso can handle that.

I don't see any difference in a monitor with tv-tuner or a tv with a vga-connector

i dont see a prob here , but remeber once it has a tv tuner , well thats when it wont support high modes etc , max will be 1024x768 so dont dream of higher ones, maybe an max of 1280x1024...

anyway i am getting an eizo with 15khz in it so i wont need a scandoubler /ff for my aga stuff etc.

cheers , hope this helped.

@ mauma,hi,
Thats an interesting question you pose there. Would a TV mfg. co. make a panel thats primary purpose is to watch moving images and show fine print as well?
Hmm. I wonder.

What Eizo model are you getting lempkee? I am considering getting an Eizo myself, but I didn't know any of them supported 15KHz.  :-)  :-?

Amiga2000, there's no such thing as an USB video input. The hub is just that - a hub. Makes one USB connector into four.

Your A2000 will most likely be able to take advantage of the screen, but you might not have enough memory on the PIV to have lots of colours in the TFT's optimal resolution.. Check to see if you can create a display mode that's the optimal resolution of the TFT and still have at least 16bit colours. The refresh rate isn't as important with the TFT as it is with a CRT.. TFTs usually don't flicker nearly as much.

The TFT with included TV tuner probably has a better max resolution than the TFT TV with included VGA connector.. Check the specs and look for yourself.. :-)

My Amiga 4000 would display all modes using a CV3D.

The only problem game when I scandoubled the display - my (CTX) TFT would desplay an 'out of range' message box, even though I could actually see the output!

I guess what this topic is all about is that some modern TFT / LCD - displays do not scan frequencies that are not usually used by standard PCs. That said, a few won't work with a scan-doubled old Amiga, and others won't work without, and some won't work anyway. Most should work with a scandoubler.

Have fun,

I have a LCD for my 1200 (Mediator+Voodoo3), it takes also old resolution like 320x240 and work great.

I have heard as well that several of the new LCD monitors will take native Amiga resolutions. I've been wanting tog et one just for that. I'd like to find a switch box that will switch on its own too so I dont have to yse this cheap one for the A3000 from the voodoo to the standard port.

@amiga2000:

Here's a few short rules about any SVGA monitor and Amiga.

- 15kHz support is out of the question (native modes through native scan rates). Good luck finding a modern monitor that supports it nowadays.

- Scan Doublers can work ONLY if your monitor can sync down to 30kHz on the horizontal scan side. I find it that most monitors that go as low as 31kHz simply can't work reliably or don't work at all.

My advice to anyone thinking about using a scan doubler with their Amiga is to look for a monitor that does 30kHz lowest horizontal scan.

I am going to buy an Eizo LCD monitor in the near future for Amiga use, its sync rasnge is as follows:

24-94 kHz on its VGA port (49-86 Hz refresh rate)
31-76 kHz on its digital port (59-61 Hz refresh rate)

This means that it should work on my scandoubler equipped Amiga.  :-)

I am, at this moment using my trusty 3000 (picasso 2) on my Samsung Syncmaster 170MP (17" LCD with tuner), and I have to say that its worked quite well - even in PAL modes.

It doesn't like a few modes, but they are all "strange"  - caused when I look at an odd sized picture with VT - I know there is better software, but it works for the most part. ;-)

Otherwise, its been fine.  It handles my 724x482 wb fine,  and all other modes that I use (mostly 800x600).

My wife's 3000 has a Spectrum card on her 170MP, and she doesn't have any problems either.
