DIY work on cars can end up costing more than having it done professionally, not only in specialized tools but then there's always the possibility of "I screwed up and now my engine digested itself."  There's alot to be said for work that comes with a warranty.

How can fixing your car yourself possibly cost more? Specialised tools? A spanner set, a screwdriver, and a ratchet you mean? And there's generally very little to screw up, put it back the same way to took it apart.

I really don't get the viewpoint. It's literally mechano for adults.

What??

"Software includes: DOS 3.1"

Ugh! ;)

That reminds of a million thrill voices back in the early 90's

"but can it run windows 95!?!?!?"

Substitute for windows 3.1 as appropriate.
Ugh.. The memories.. they haunt me.

And how many engines have you had apart, Mr. Labs?

Sure, there's basic stuff like changing the oil and flushing the radiator that anyone can do, but fully disassembling an engine is better left to people who are qualified.

Three. two BMC a-series, one 850cc mini unit with a blown head gasket, and another that needed conversion to run on unleaded fuel (valve seats on old engines get buggered up without lead, so it was easiest to replace the entire head as one unit). Also the engine of an old honda 125 (forget the exact bike but it was found in a ditch). That one wouldn't turn over no matter what, so we pulled it apart to find it entirely full of mud. Scrapped it.

Like people who can operate a ratchet? It's not hard, you can't really put the wrong part in the wrong place. A camshaft will not fit inside a carburator no matter how hard you push.

Anyway, I think we were talking about those "amiga" things?

Says the man from a country where both changing gear while driving in a streight line, and driving in a circle in identical cars count as motorsport. Seriously, American car enthusiasts should feel shame for nascar and drag racing.

EDIT: I'm also curious as to what you think needs "full disassembly of an engine". swapping cams is taking the cylinder heads off, and then putting them back on. And pretty much every time a car breaks down it's because X engine accessory broke, something that's usually easy to get to, or gasket failure which is also just taking the heads off, raplacing a sheet of cork, and putting it back on.

Actually, as an american I have never watched nascar racing. Drag racing is ok just to see the tremendous amounts of power they can get to the pavement without breaking. Racing for me is road courses, car or bike doesnt matter. I generally like to root for the BMW teams. Turner BMW is my favorite, of course I buy a lot from Turner motorsports.

I usually don't feed the trolls, but....

fastest production sedan @ nurburgring?
Cadillac CTS-V (7:59)

2nd fastest production coupe @ nurburgring?
Dodge Viper ACR (7:22.1)
(1st is the Gumpert Apollo Speed @ 7:11.5)

But, still, how exactly do American cars not "do" that, again?

Might as well break out these pics of MOS I grabbed again, now that I'm reminded of them...

Not an Agnus to be found, sadly.

That's because all of the Amiga's left in that place are sitting beside me right now. :) Someone I used to work for bought the salvage rights for the electrical switch gear and asked me if I wanted anything -- Every machine that hadn't been broken up by vandals is now here with me, 2 A2000's, 4 Commodore PC's and the boards/controllers for a Tank arcade game. :)

To quote from the old arcade hit, I think it might have been "Punch Out":

So american cars can can't use fuel efficiently? That makes very little sense. It's nice to see you post petrol station signs when american car companies proudly advertise 25mpg, as if it isn't terrible. Oh, and a centlitre is not what you think it is.

Cam install? You mean you don't do it yourself?

no.. too much work, too little time.  On my previous race car, I did alot of work on it.. I just got tired of doing my own work so I took it to a race shop up the street from my house and got a good deal on it.
