Is my floppy drive broken?
« on: January 27, 2010, 02:25:31 PM »
Hi All,

I'm trying to install workbench 3.0 on my A1200 with newly fitted HDD. I can run the install program and I get to the point where it asks me to insert the amiga workbench disk in any floppy drive. I put the correct disk and in it immediately flashes the screen and says 'Please insert the correct disk to continue'. I have inserted the correct disk which I know works. The thing that's worrying me is that the drive makes no attempt to read. The screen just flashes instantly and asks me to insert the correct disk. I assume the mechanism that tells the drive that a disk has been inserted/removed isn't working.

Does sound like the case to the more knowledgeable here? Is there anything I can besides buy a replacement drive?

You could try the command diskchange and see if it works then.
I think it's syntax is diskchange df0:

It's been years and years since I was an Amiga user, and even then it was only a games machine. Can you give me a run through of where I enter this command? I assume there's a shell somewhere?

It might be the install script. I get that problem with some games.

Also check the name of the hard drive and check the startup-sequence on the floppy. It might be refering to the name of the hard drive (or floppy) and not HD0:/DF0: like it should.

I managed to input the command as recommended, but it says unknown command. Any know the correct syntax?

Fanscale, your ideas sound interesting. Can you please give a little more information on where and how I check this? What I should be looking for, etc?

Thanks guys

Are you using the floppy to boot with?  Sounds like a strange problem.  Also, you have to boot from the Install 3.0 disk if you want to install workbench on a new HDD.

Can you hear the trademark Amiga floppy drive "click" every few seconds?  (Only heard with no disk in drive)
