How to transfer PC to Amiga
« on: January 12, 2010, 03:12:19 AM »
Hi, forgive me if this has been asked and answered before but I am returning to the Amiga after a long time.  I have a A500+/WB 3.1 no HD and I'd like to download some demos with my PC and run them on the Amiga can someone point me in the right direction?

Look up Amiga Explorer (Amiga Forever`s AExplorer) with a null-modem serial cable

I found the Hombre disk to be extremely well featured for transferring data and writing back ADF images from a PC to an Amiga. If someone in your country with an Amiga could download Hombre and write it to a floppy disk for you, you'll be set. You'll only need a PC with either a floppy drive, a null modem (serial) cable, or a laplink (parallel) cable to transfer the data to your Amiga.

I'm in Australia so postage from here to anywhere else in the world generally takes longer than it does from anywhere else (except maybe New Zealand), but I can send you the disk if no one closer is able to.

For anyone who can write Amiga floppy disks and wants a complete transfer package for easily writing all those ADFs on your PC's hard drive back to your Amiga floppies, this is the package to get: http://wiki.abime.net/transfer:hombre

Thanks guys!  I was just going through my box of disks and found CrossDos 4.01 but it needs a hard drive to install.  I think I have a null modem cable around here somewhere but won't I need a client on the Amiga side like Cammy was suggesting?  If so does someone in the US have that software?

Are there any Amiga users in the United States who can download this ADF, write it to a floppy disk, and mail it to our new friend?

All the software contained on the disk is freely distributable, so there's no need to feel like a guilty pirate. ;)

AmigaKit sells ADF transfer kit, not sure though if you'd perhaps want a HD install to make the most of it. Check it out with them.

But also, Amiga Explorer which is mentioned here is good. It's part of the Amiga Forever package which is an amiga owner essential.
A posting a day keeps the sanity away...

I found a null modem cable, but to my dismay my home built PC doesn't have serial or Parall ports because I never tought I'd use them.  Oh well, I'll look on Ebay...but the way thanks for the amiga forever tip, I got think client side for the pc I think.

It works perfectly.

You can read 720k PC formatted floppies in your 500, I think all you need is Workbench 2 or higher.  Insert disk, double click the PC0 icon whereever it's hiding (DOSdrivers or something) and you should be all set.

I also am trying to transfer files from my pc to my Amiga 4000 with no luck.  I have tried Amiga Explorer (trial), but cannot get it to connect.  I don't want to buy it unless I know it works.  Cloanto says that you can use just the pc side software and it will load necessary files the first time it connects (via serial) to the Amiga, but it also says the trial version is limited to files of 1K only.  I suspect this to be my problem.  I have verified the pinouts on my null modem cable and tried connecting with XP and Vista (virus and FW turned off). If I have room inside the 4000, should I get a network card for my Amiga?  If so, any recommendations?

Amiga 4000, WB3.0, Toaster 4000, Kitchen Sync w/S-Video Card, 20Mb HD and 120MB HD.  I also have an Amiga 500, bone stock.

Thanks in advance.

Did you right click the Icon on the Windows side and run the Setup?

Most A4000's have a High density disk drive, so you should be able to read HD floppy drives from a PC (1.44MB disks). This should be enaugh to get adf files as well, as they are always less than 1MB in size. As adviced before in this thread, locate the PC0 (probably in storage/dosdrivers) and run it. You should get a PC0 icon on the workbench as soon as you insert a disk.

You could get a network card, but if its only for transfering som files it will be expensive. I think it would be cheaper to get a IDE-CDROM drive and connect it to your IDE interface. And then burn the all the files you want to a CD and get them from there. You must probably disconnect one of your HD's while you do this. But if you need the space you should probably try to locate another bigger HD anyway. People throw HDs like that away anyway so it shouldnt cost you much, if anything.

I guess FTD (follow the directions) or FTFD in this case would have been appropriate.  Worked like a champ.  Thank you so much, mbueler!

I will also follow amyren's advice for copying data via a floppy from pc to Amiga as I would like to be able to do that (but haven't been able to).

I was hoping, for reliability, to replace the hard drives in the Amiga with a CF card. Now that I can transfer files, I will reread the forums on how to prep that card for the different partitions needed.

Thanks again!
