A4000T (68040@25 MHz), Toccata and AHI v6...
« on: January 06, 2010, 11:37:05 PM »
Hi to all,
I am trying the new (for me) AHI v6...
In the subject Amiga the sound is bad (I am using OS3.9 AMPlifier!), like the CPU cannot calculate the mpeg decoding in time!!! I tried with every config but nothing... even using Paula brings to nothings! :(
I remember that with old v4 I reached some good results... is this normal? Are AHI v6 so much CPU power eater?
Note that with paulaaudio.device everything is ok... but I discovered recently that this solution is only for AMPlifier... and only for Paula and Melody Z2 (that I have in another Amiga)...

Hi flaviosr:

I can't really help you.... I have never had any luck playing MP3's on '040-based machines... But, you may want to use SongPlayer instead... Until recently, I couldn't get anything decent sounding from AMPlifier. (AHI V. 6 too, BTW) Maybe check your config. again...

Good luck.

An 040 can probably handle MPEG decoding at full quality... if you don't do anything else at the same time. But remember melodympeg.device? In AMPlifier's MPEG player prefs, on the decoder tab, set playback to Hardware and type in melodympeg.device. That'll offload decoding to the Melody board, freeing your CPU and allowing you to multitask.

If you're working on a machine without an MPEG decoder, also play with the Samplerate and Quality cycle gadgets in AMPlifier, and the output rate in AHI prefs.

AHI 6 requires an 020, while AHI 4 could use a plain 000. Not sure if that translates directly into more CPU usage on better processors, but it's a possibility.

EDIT: Whoops, just saw you're using a Toccata and not the Melody. Still, the Samplerate, Quality, and output rate settings should suffice to get you balanced between quality and speed.
