AHI problems...
« on: January 02, 2010, 07:27:12 PM »
Hi to all,
I cannot make the AHI driver work!!!
I can use the Paula chip (paulaaudio.device) and the mixer does work (I have a Melody Z2 in an Amiga 3000).
When I set the AHI in AmiAmp it does not make any sound!!! I tried Paula and Melody drivers and nothing!!! Please note that AmiAmp does work! I mean that I see the audio spectrum and everything is ok... apart that I cannot ear anything!
I use the driver taken from here:
  http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/search.pl?product=melody&company=

Any suggestion?

Have you tired the Melody driver from aminet?

http://aminet.net/driver/audio/MelodyDriver.lha

I have a prelude, and among the software was a test program to test the audio output....ie it addressed the hardware directly.  Is there such a program with your melody distribution?
If it has tocotta emulation (the prelude does too) then maybe you could try using a program that works with tocotta (octamed sound studio does if I remember correctly).

AHI isn't the easiest thing to set up,so maybe there's something wrong in the settings?

If you search for an earlier thread called "More questions about AHI with my Delfina card" you will find some good info about AHI and find out some of the members with knowledge here on the org.  (Matt H is one).

Well. first of all I tried a very easy thing that I forgot!
I put directly the melodyaudio.device in AmiAmp and the card works! :)
Now I have only to understand why AHI does not... I am going to read the other 3d!

OH MY GOD!!!
I found the problem and I cannot believe it!!!
There is a flag called "volume boost" and it was set as on by default!!!
If I disable it everything is ok... does anybody have some explanations for this? :-o

Just to be sure about the files I use, I have the following revisions:
  melodympeg.device v2.10
  melodyaudio.device v2.13
  ahi.device v4.18
Something more uptodate?

Looks like I've been summoned :)

@ flaviosr

Are you using AMPlifier or AmigaAmp? AMPlifier was developed by the same team that did the Melody card, and supports some other retargetable audio standard called X-Audio. (I suspect it's the only program that uses X-Audio and I also suspect that paulaaudio.device and melodyaudio.device are the only drivers for it).

To get AHI 100% operational, you also need melody.audio and the MELODY audiomodes file (see the readme in the Aminet archive for where to put them).

Also note that AHI 4.18 is fairly old. The current version is 6.x. One of the key differences is that increasing the number of audio channels for each unit in AHI 4 decreases the overall output volume. So if you've set up an AHI unit to have 32 channels, you're probably not going to hear anything. This bug/feature is changed in AHI 6, so you'll have full volume regardless of the number of channels enabled (as long as you set the cycle gadget in AHI prefs to Full Volume).

There are a couple of buggy programs that choke on AHI 6, though. Abuse is one, so if you play that a lot you might want to reconsider going to 6.x. I haven't personally encounted any other problematic programs, so I recommend upgrading.

uh oh... yes... you are right! I am using AMPlifier... the one that comes with OS3.9!
And now it works with all my Amigas!!! :)
A3000 (68060) with Melody Z2, A4000T (68040) with Toccata and A1200 (68060) with SB128!!!
The only note is that I cannot put the "famous" flag! :( with all of them!!! Anyway I am happy now! Let's it works... now I can start with following steps.
Where can I find AHI v6?

AHI's home is here. There's also a version 2.35 of AMPlifier kicking around. Not sure where, though.
