AmigaOS 3.9: new install
« on: November 12, 2003, 03:58:46 AM »
Hi!
I have an A3000 (CSPPC + CV64) and I would like to install AOS 3.9 from scratch on a new HD (>4 GB). Is there an FAQ about the process? Where to get the latest upgrades for the OS and other software and how to install them?
Windows does not cut the mustard.  But it does cut the cheese.

good question, I'd like to see something like that as well. The closest ting I've seen is this:

Some tips. First of all you need the first partition to be smaller than 4Gb. 3.9 or something.

The easiest way to install OS 3.9 is to install 3.1 first and then run the install from the CD. If you can reach the CD in some other way, say booting from disk, you can install the whole OS starting with 3.1 wich is on the CD and then upgrade to OS 3.9.

The BB1 upgrade can be found at http://os.amiga.com/ in the OS 3.9 section.

And BB2 can be found at http://haage-partner.com/

I hope that this helps.

Hi,

HotRod is right, to add i would recomend the boot drive kept small. my os partition is 250Mb, big enough. The rest "18Gb" is work, games, you know. even MS says the less you write to the boot the better.

Agreed. The rule of thumb is to boot, you need the boot partition to start and end wholly within the 0-4 GB limit. Once 3.9 SetPatch has run, you will be able to access other partitions.

Actually, I'd reccomend half that amount (128MB). I got 200MB and never use more than 1/3. Dunno if the installer demands more though.

Then again, I didn't install all the junk that was on the OS39 cd to my bootdisk...

I have to reccomend that you install KingCon (Shell replacement) and Toolmanager (program launcher) both available at Aminet, instead of those supplied with 3.9. They really suck.

And oh, if you want some slight notion of speed:
C:SetPatch QUIET SKIPROMUPDATES=exec.library

(edit)

Me stupid; his h/w has a future with OS4. Go for 256MB.

Ha, ha! Yeah, so nothing special it seems. How did you know I am thinking about getting AOS 4? And yes there are better programs than some included with AOS 3.9. Why skipping exec.library though?

kingcon works fine on os3.9 , you just need to do some changes...

its abit tricky but it works fine here, but its long  since i installed it so i probably wont answer to precise on how to do so.

anyway for me , i installed 3.9 cd striaght onto my setup without any major problems, the installer is pretty good.

the only prob was to get the cdrom booting with a floppy.

imho os3.9 should have been delivered with 1 floppy and 1 cd...

but a good tip is , tell us your setup and maybe someone can make a boot disk for you (if they have simmilar setup).

cheers
Whats up with all the hate!

After installing AOS 3.9 and the BB's ;-) everything seems fine but is WOS that is included with it the latest? And what about PowerUP emu? 68060.library? Any other software that was updated after BB2? Side note: CacheCDFS just crashes my Miggy (with a Plextor 12/4/32) so I had resorted to AsimCDFS; oldie but goodie:-)))

Several small partitions (around 100 Megs) on a large HD are very useful for an alternate OS, Cache, etc.  I usually make the others about the size of a CD for backup purposes.  Remember that the printer drivers that come with OS3.9 are acknowleged to be buggy, use the ones from OS3.5.

@kingkleks: Because it's a sluggish unoptimized C rewrite that replaces a fast Assembler exec. It's  the foundation of the PPC exec which probably have been optimized already...
Anyway, it doesn't show until you run many tasks simultaineously, like when a browser decode a ton of images.

Personally, I bought OS3.9 for several reasons... Making my 060 board run at vanilla A1200 speed wasn't one of them :-(
