PPC Test Disk missing ppc.library
« on: November 27, 2009, 09:02:31 AM »
Hi

I found Thomas' PPC test disk here - http://powerup.amigaworld.de/index.php?lang=en&page=24 and booted my 4000/CSPPC with it

However, when I run the PowerUp test I get an error saying the ppc.library could not be found and, when running the Warp test, I get a 'ramtest' requester with an error message with the usual 'Suspend' and 'Reboot' buttons.

Anyone know how to fix to get around the ppc.library missing error? I checked on the disk and the library is in Libs: (both ppc.library and powerpc.library)

Thanks

Have you flashed your board to remove the ppc.library ? or has this been done in the past.

IIRC only BPPC has the library in flash.

To be honest I've got no idea..only had the card a few days. If you can tell me how to do it I'd appreciate it as I have no idea and the CSPPC manual wasn't any help.

One thing that was odd on an unrelated note. Somehow (with MapROM disabled) at one point my Kickstart screen was showing 3.9 not 3.1 (on the mobo). I'm assuming the card somehow cached or has a copy of 3.9 that replaces 3.1? To be honest I'm feeling a bit out of my depth with this CSPPC :(

That's correct, I believe. Hence the need for BPPCFix to remove it on WarpUP installations. I don't recall there being any similar requirements for CSPPC.

Flash your CSPPC and try the test-disk again.

PowerUP and WarpUP are incompatible. You should run only one test at a time and then reboot before you run the other test.

OK. I flashed the CSPPC with the file you linked Bamiga and it went successfully..flashing worked fine.

I then tried Thomas' disk again and, again, the PowerPC test said it couldn't find ppc.library and a returncode of 10.

I then saw Thomas' message concerning the need to reboot in-between tests so I rebooted and ran the WarpUp test. It displayed' Starting WarpOS test' but that was all...nothing happened after that and, after waiting for a couple of minutes, figured nothing was going to.

It might work on WarpUp system running PowerUp emulation. But the emulation isn't perfect.

Unfortunately I don't have an OS. I am having trouble installing OS 4.0 (details in another thread) so at the moment have a pretty useless 4000 :)

My use of the PPC Test Disk is to rule out a PPC problem causing the OS 4.0 install to fail.

If powerup refuses to start and warpos just hangs, there is probably something wrong with the PPC. Do you have RAM on the CSPPC ? Without RAM the PPC does not work. Does the cooling fan on the PPC still run at full speed ? The PPC might fail or even get damaged if it becomes too hot. Are you sure you've got a CSPPC and not a CSMK3 ? They look very similar. Did you adjust the clock jumpers on the motherboard ? The CSPPC needs both jumpers set to external while other processor cards need them on internal.

Hi Thomas. The CSPPC has 128MB of RAM installed (4x 32MB EDO SIMMs). The PPC cooling fan is plugged into the board header. Seems to be a constant speed...not blazingly fast but not slow either. Definitely got a CSPPC as I have two CPUs and a fan on each. Clock jumpers were checked and are both set to external.

I'll try the Test Disk I made today on my PPC A1200 tomorrow to make sure it's working (although I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be).

As an aside, I can boot into OS 3.9 on this A4000 (the hard drive was pulled from my A4000 WE 040/40 a few weeks back). Is there something I can run in that OS to verify PPC operation relatively easily?

Sorry to tell you, but indeed this means your PPC has died. The card will most likely work fine 060 only, but your PPC side has kicked the bucket.
I've had the exact same issue, sent the card off to Amiga Center, they tried reflowing the chip, however this didn't work. You'll need to replace the PPC processor or have it reballed, if the chip itself is still OK.

Eek...that was the news I was dreading :( I'm assuming from your comment that if reflowing doesn't work it's just not worth repairing?

Reflowing is an attempt at resoldering the existing pins, sometimes when the PPC chip itself is okay this could work. It's worth a shot, ask JJ at Amiga Center what he charges for a reflow attempt. I believe I paid € 150,- euro for mine, but that included fixing the 68060.

Sometimes the PPC gets damaged by applying pressure to the cooler when placing the card in an A4000, in that case reflowing will not help.

Repairing could be worthwhile, if you have a source of NEW PPC's. Reballing them (re-attaching the lead balls at the bottom om the IC) is too expensive as they need a custom made raster.
