Hi

You need a graphics card with OS3.9 and CD drive so I would stay in the plastic and use 3.1 generally.

Nope, you don't need either to run OS3.9 ;)
Life begins at 100 MIPS!

Nice Ports on AmiNet!

I think the 3.1/3.9 thing is really a matter of preference on an accelerated amiga... I keep a partition of each, but generally use 3.9 and revert to 3.1 for testing purposes. Either one will need a lot of tweaking for optimal use and performance, but 3.9 has a few basic features "built-in" which makes it less hassle overall IMHO. I haven't found any real compatibility issues with games or demos, and that's about all I use the amigas for.

Regarding speed, I didn't feel much difference in AGA WB operation between an '030 and '060, especially if you keep the screenmode reasonable. On the A1200, my 3.9 install takes maybe 1 second longer to boot than bare 3.1. :-)

I say go for 3.9 and trim it down rather than get 3.1 and spruce it up. More stability and support for things that way. But 3.1 should do fine too probably. If you get 3.9 though you get 3.1 on the CD so you can install just 3.1 if you find you don't like 3.9!

One thing to remember is that 4GB is *HUGE* for an A1200. These things came with 80MB hard disks! Stick with 4GB as it'll make life easier later on. If you really need more (very unlikely) then change to 8GB or more, as long as you're using 3.9.

Go for a Blizzard 1230Mk4 @50 MHz, I think, with 32MB of RAM or maybe 64MB if it's the same price, either is plenty. Don't go for 68040s as they're not all that much faster but run a lot hotter, and an 060 is pointless without a graphics card (Indivision is not a graphics card for these purposes! But get one anyway!)

Lastly, enjoy it!

Personally, I use an Amiga 1200 with 8Mb of fast RAM running OS3.0 for games/music applications, and that's just enough for almost everything! Of course, I miss my Blizzard 1230 for doing silly stuff like running Doom or whatever but in reality, if you're into music and classic games a machine with some extra RAM will do.

I have it fitted with a CF card for a hard drive and an SD card adapter, and these things really help.

Ok all, i've been looking at some initial upgrades to get started with after xmas

1 3.1 rom's
2 4gb cf hd
3 030 accelerator with 32 mb ram

i'm gonna first however through dec try and build some of my games back up as i only have a few, so e-bay it is to trace some of those classic's :)

I also want to get a new keyboard for the 1200, as some of the keys have yellowed, but the case is still a good colour white so it would finish it off i think

is amikit the best place for these ?

Thanks
