CDROM issue
« on: November 20, 2009, 06:13:54 AM »
I have a A200/030 that has a CDRom drive installed. The previous install (OS3.5) had the CDROM drive functioning correctly. (Auto mount, insert a CD and the CD disc icon would show up on the workbench). Due to some corrupted files, I have had to re-format the System: partition. Once complete, I re-formatted and installed OS 3.1 from floppy's.

I have the CD0 dirver in the dev/DOSDrivers drawer as well as CDXL in the dev/datatypes drawer.

Now, when I boot OS 3.1 with the above drivers in place, I cannot get workbench to bring up a CD Disc icon so I can access the CDROM.

Any idea's? I'm trying to get the CDROM drive working again so I can install OS 3.5 (and then OS 3.9).

MC

CDXL is an animation format - its got owt to do with CDs.  You need IDE-Fix or AsimCDFS, or CacheCDFS installed.

There should be L:CDFileSystem as well IIRC

Edit the CD0 file with a texteditor and enter the correct device driver and unit number. The name of the device driver depends on the type of controller to which your CDROM is connected.

Kickstart 3.1 does not support CD drives. You should boot from your OS 3.9 emergency disk and install 3.9 onto the empty partition. No need for 3.1 and 3.5.

If you don't have an emergency disk, you need to install IDEfix and create one. You won't be able to access the CD drive without IDEfix or AsimCDFS. Only OS 3.5 and 3.9 support CD drives on the IDE bus without 3rd-party software, not 3.1.

Bye,
Thomas

I'm a bit confused. I thought he had an A2000. He's talking about an A200/030. If he means he has an A2000/030, than he probably won't need idefix. Probably he would just have to change the device and unit number. If he means he has an A1200/030 then yes, you need idefix.

Yes, that's true. If it's an A2000, then it's dependant on the controller's firmware. Most 3rd-party SCSI and IDE controllers do support CD drives.

You are correct. I have a A2000/030. When booting and holding down the two mouse buttons, I get the early startup control screen. From there I select boot options but my CDROM drive does not show up as a bootable device.

I guess I'm going to have to figure out how to get CDFS installed first. My only problem is the two PC's that I own do not have PC floppy drives....

You can't boot from CD.

Like I said, under OS3.1 edit the CD0 file in Devs/dosdrivers, and change the device and unit number.
edit: 3.1 already comes with a cd filesystem. It's not great, but good enough to make an emergency startup disk for installing os3.9
Which controller do you have your CDROM connected to ?

After you changed the CD0 file and the CDROM is recognized, you can make an emergency-startup disk.
