SoftHut's new GVP 1230 batch ship with overclocked processors ?

One of my friends had some stability issues with his newly purchased hardware and sent it over to me. First we thought it was somekind of power related problem, but when I looked at it, the newly bought GVP 1230 card had a 16 MHz 68030 on it overclocked to 40 MHz. It's no wonder there are stability issues with this card due to overheating. I'ld like to know if any other buyers of this board has the same issues, or if their processors are genuine 40 MHz parts ...

Here are some pictures of the board. Note the DCE silkscreen, is this a reproduction of the DCE hardware ? If somebody from softhut is using these forum, I'ld like to have some answers ...

Did you try clocking it down to see if it becomes stable?  How about adding massive cooling when running it at 40MHz?

I know years ago a lot of those QFP '030 accelerators came with overclocked 33MHz chips, but 16MHz? That's definitely stretching it a bit...!

Were the 40MHz PLCC ones ever made?? I recall looking at the freescale site a while back and only finding reference to the 33MHz part... memory could be fuzzy though. At any rate... that amount of overclock is a little ridiculous..

I got one of those boards and it had 25MHz parts on it (with a pathetic attempt at hiding the real rating, as in your photo). There was some instability as it was, but with a heat sink glued onto the 030 and some room for air to flow under the machine it seemed to be OK.

hi damagex, thanks for the info, yeah i noticed when i was running it with my a1200 it would get hot then after 10 min or so, when copying a file or playing music it would freeze or guru on me.  so with the heatsink and some airflow no problem now?

yeah i am quite disappointed in softhut, especially after they bolloxed up the shipping dates too.  but oh well, what can you do eh?

you could change the part for a real 40 or 50 Mhz part which is easy to do but customer`s should have been told it`s a overclocked part if true,perhaps some or all customer can get a refund if found the part(s) turn out not to be real,nevertheless it does not make good reading if true.


err on another note was there suppose to be another accelerator for the A1200 a long time ago but could not get hold of the 150 pin connector. where did the connector come from?
