A1200 refurbished or new old stock
« on: November 16, 2009, 08:45:40 AM »
Hi,

I was wondering - if you had to buy an A1200 then would you go for the refurbished version (or buy one from ebay) or for the new old stock version?

Regards,

I would buy a New old stock A1200, because you get a shiny white case and keyboard and doesn't have used scratches on it. The only problem with a NOS A1200 is the price.

The refurbished A1200 is cheaper and they have been fully checked for faulty parts before selling the A1200 to you.

I bought a refurbished A1200 and CD32 years ago and still working.

Buying secondhand is something like winning the lottery, because the buyer mostly checked the A1200, but it is possible when you get it the A1200 will work for years or days. The most problems you can get, are problems with floppy drives, Hard drives and maybe missing the Workbench disks.

Well I just bought a refurbished A1200 top and bottom case from and it arrived with a few marks (acceptable) but a chip out of the side of the top lid. Refurbished in my eyes is tidy, clean and usual wear and tear but damage is damage and should be stated.

I've sent a support claim in so we'll see what happens but, bottom line I guess, is if you're after mint condition then get new-old stock. If you don't mind a few marks then refurbished is perfectly fine. The only issue I have with mine is the damage..everything else is just fine.

Would I buy refurb cases again? Probably but that's only because I'm not aware of anywhere that just sells new cases anymore. If I had the option of new or refurb I'd go new every time and that's simply as if I'm spending the money I want the condition to be reflective of this.

Then again there's Retr0bright...have turned a few disgusting yellow A500/600 cases into ones that you really can't pick from a 'new' one.

It's pot luck really...one man's idea of mint is another one's idea of good. If you're fussy get new...if not get refurb but get pictures if possible.

The Caps. will still need replaced in a new model.  Possibly even more so than a used model, so be wary of that.

Plus I think there is an issue with AT A1200s` floppy drives.   They were from a PeeCee, and had problems with some games with custom bootblocks.

Not 100% on this but pretty sure that most of the NOS stuff kicking around is from the C days

I got one of the "new" old stock 1200s from Amigakit because I wanted it to be in perfect shape (and it was).   It even came in the original box so it was like Christmas.  It was a little extra but if money is the issue, you can just buy a used one for much less.

The only reason I'd go for a used 1200 is I don't particularly like the Amiga Technologies label.  If they said Commodore, I'd definitely go for new.

In 2000 I bought a NOS Amiga 1200 Magic Pack and I got an Amiga 1200 with 1D4 motherboard and a normal diskdrive without a special disk drive adapter.

It's really quite amazing that there is even any stock left... I wonder how much still exists?

I purchased a refurbished A1200 from AmigaKit.  It was a nice white case and clean keyboard.  My only complaint was that it had what appears to be a PC floppy drive with an activity light, and the eject button rubbed against the case.  Thankfully I had a spare (original A1200 drive) laying around for some reason.  Otherwise, no issues in purchasing the refurb.

I noticed Amigakit had some refurbed Amiga 1200's available a couple of weeks ago but the 'buy now' button has since dissapeared  I assume because there is no more stock. I've emailed Amigakit twice over the last couple of weeks but have yet to recieve a reply.

Can anyone from Amigakit advise if any new refurbed stock will be available soon?

I live in Australia and good A1200's dont appear on ebay all too often.
