Giving life to stock Amiga 2000
« on: November 10, 2003, 05:01:12 AM »
Greetings, all. First post here.

I've held on to my stock Amiga 2000 that I'd like to now get out of the box and hook up again.   I'd like to hook up all of my old software and play those old games.  What can I do to breath new life into it?

I picked up an AdSCSI 2000 card and tried to install it but the power light on the Amiga just flashed. Is there something I need to do first? Or might the card just be bad?

I still have Workbench 1.3 and the original 1 MB of RAM so I know I need some updating.

What kind of RAM can I put in there?

Thanks, everyone. Here's to looking forward to getting this machine up and running!

Peace!
Sebes

First time user, huh?
Say, you wouldn't happen to want to use a CD writter on that 1.3 A2000, would you?

If that machine's been in storage long, the first thing you should do is CHECK THE BATTERY. Make sure it's not leaking, or you'll have a dead or soon-to-be-dead A2000 on your hands.

Now you can move onto the fun stuff! Either ditch the 1.3 ROMs and get 3.1, or install a ROM switcher so you can use them both. 3.1 will cost you direct compatibility with old games, but you can use WHDLoad to install them to hard disk under 3.1.

You'll probably want an accelerator, too. Blizzard2060 is a good bet, but hard to find. 030 and 040 accelerators are easier to come by. Also note that if you keep your 1.3ROMs in the switcher, you can't use an 060 (possibly and 040 either). Many accelerators have SCSI controllers onboard for a harddrive.

Most accelerators will let you add FAST RAM to them. If you want more CHIP RAM, you'll need a MegAChip, DKB used to make them. Most retailers still have them, but they're expensive.

Next, you'll probably want a GFX card for better screenmodes. CV3D and PicassoIV are probably the best cards for the A2000. Also consider a network card for ethernet access.

Be aware that upgrading an A2000 is extremely expensive. You might be better off part-exchanging it for an A3000. You'll lose the internal 5.25" bay and some card slots, but you have the option of getting PPC acceleration and faster Zorro3 (vs Zorro2) GFX cards. It also has a built in scandoubler so all modern monitors will work natively. If you get an A4000, you can swap the daughterboard with one for PCI slots and get more modern GFX expansions. No scandoubler on the 4000, though. It's your call.

Phew! Have I missed anything?

Ah, the joys of upgrading! Thanks very much for the information. I guess I'll be sifting through ebay looking for some good deals on stuff.

I pulled it out of storage last night and tried a couple of games. (Test Drive, Road Warrior, Off-Road Challenge). They worked! And the machine fired right up. (I'll check the batter tonight) However, about 30 minutes after using it, the video just went out. I plugged into the RCA mono video out and it worked, so I'm wondering what happened. I'll play with it later. :(  Turns out I have Workbench 2.0 but I'm sure that's not a huge leap over WB 1.3 I've done no upgrading on this box since I bought it back in 1986(?).

Peace!

Remember though, that if you just want to play old games, you shouldn't upgrade to much. A harddisk & some extra ram would be enough.

If you want to do more with your 2000 (use more recent games and other software), turbocards and other stuff are nice to have.

So, if you want it for the old games: don't change a thing...
Life sucks. Then you die. Then they throw mud in your face. Then you get eaten by worms. Be happy it happens in that order... My Amiga 1200

@csebes:

Welcome to A.org! 2.0 you say? Is your workbench grey/blue or orange/blue?
If you bought it in 86 (or thereabouts) and haven't changed anything to the setup since, you can't have OS 2.x. OS 2.x was first released in 91? 92? around that time anyway.

For the ultimate upgrade you could buy a 060 turboboard+mem/ethernet card/decent graphics card (something like a Cybervision perhaps)/CD-ROM/bigger HD (probably). However you'd probably be broke after such an upgrade :-).

@iam:

Naaaaah, I don't think what you're thinking is right. Well, he could've changed his style ofcourse.

Did you boot from the AdSCSI installer disk?
Simple question that everyone else over looked?

Assuming a stock A2000, you can add only 8 megs MAX of additional RAM via a Zorro slot card. If you were to pickup an accelerator (68020 x 14 or better), any RAM on that card is additional.

As this is a very old 68000, what revision motherboard is it. Anything less than rev 6.0 would be a waste of time above 2.1 and an 68020. The rev # is on the board, below the power light area.
Won\'t hide my location.

I used to have an A2000 for a short while a couple of years ago with a superb Magni internal genlock inside and kickstart 2.x and a 68020 card with 2 Mb. The first thing I did was to remove the genlock, add a CV64/3D card that came out of my A1200, and a Nexus scsi card with 4 Mb on it. Cool !! 6 Mb Fast Ram and a 4 Mb gfx card. Removed kickstart 3.1 of my A500+ and added it to the A2000. Ready for OS 3.9 !! Me was very very happy !! ... but that was soon to change. As Amiga4k just said, maximum 8 Mb. That meant that my gfx card was not recognized and I had 6 Mb of Fast Ram. If I removed the Nexus scsi card with 4 Mb then I had only 2 Mb of Fast Ram which was not enough to be able to use my gfx card, certainly not with OS 3.9 ... I moved the CV64/3D back to the A1200 and sold the 6 Mb A2000 ... still have that genlock somewhere in my room ...  :-)
