Can't get decent resolution from Cybervision Card
« on: November 12, 2009, 09:56:28 AM »
Hi all,

It's been a wee while since I posted a request for help :)

I have an Amiga 4000 with a Phase 5 CyberVision 64/3D with scan doubler and a 22" LCD Monitor.  I've installed Picasso 96 but none of the resolutions / frequencies will work on the LCD.  The only resolution I can get to work are the "standard" Interlaced and non interlaced resolutions.  None of the Cybervision ones work (even the low res ones) as they either end up as "no signal" or "signal out of range".  My OS is WB 3.9.

Any help as always is appreciated :)

You have to fine tune your screenmodes so you get a supported refresh - 60 Hz should work. I tested my screen on Windows and found out that is goes 44-54 Hz, 59-61 Hz and 74-75 Hz. After that it was much easier to edit Picasso96 modes so that my monitor began to show something. After having one working mode it's easier than in the dark...

I too have experienced similar problems with my CV64-3D with scandoubler on an LCD monitor. I can get 1024x768 and 800x600 to work but nothing else. AGA screen modes scandoubled are displayed but with a "frequency out of range" error.

What I've found is that the range of supported modes on LCD screens is not as wide as traditional CRT's. I have tried 15" and 17" LCD's and they both have issues.

What I have done now is to use 1024x768 for workbench (which works) and for other modes not supported by the LCD I use a CRT hooked up as a second monitor. Not an ideal solution but it works.

Fiddling around with P96 settings, try turning interlace on, scan double off, or other combinations can help.

Thanks both - will take on board your suggestions and have a go later.  Apart from the H and V frequencies - should I also change the "clock" setting on Picasso as it's sitting at something like 80hz as default but I assumed this was just the speed of the card?

Cheers

If you have a picture when on P96 test mode you quickly see what happens if you alter the settings. By adjusting the clock (pixel clock or whatever it is) you get your vertical refresh into something your monitor can handle. As you see the working bands are narrow, maybe just a couple of Hz. I had my screenmode settings after a CRT tube hovering between 80 and 120 Hz refresh and had to lower the pixel clock lots and change some doublescan/normal/interlaced settings too to change everything into 60 (well, 59-61 accepted).

Thanks Zipper - I can't get any mode at all to work so any time I hit test I'm not sure if the machine itself freezes or just cant display but it never comes back without a reboot.  Will try reducing the clock to 60hz and change maybe 800x600 to work at around 60hz too and see what happens :)

In test mode a tap on left or right arrow key with pressed down left shift key introduces small changes which may bring back/remove the picture as it is stretched/narrowed horizontally. But first you need a picture...

@Skilgannon - what brand is your 22" monitor? Do you know what its minumum and maximum H and V frequencies are?

Also when you use the test mode in P96 the screen should revert back to what you were using initially after a short period of around 30s or so.

If you have no joy at all with P96, you could try cybergraphx. Some say its better for CV64 than P96.

Womder if its the driver then because using the normal screen mode pref I can test all the resolutions that you get as standard with OS3.9 and when they dont work at least it comes back (think I am running in 640 x 256 laced or something like that) it's purely when I use the cards own resolutions that it hangs.  Might try the cybergraphx as well tonight.

Cheers all

What's in your devs/monitors drawer? You should have a driver along the lines of CV64 (possibly with a 3D at the end, I'm not in front of my miggy at the moment to check). What other drivers have you got in your devs/monitors drawer? And which port on the CV64-3D do you have your monitor plugged into - the one for the scan doubler or the other one for the CV64-3D?

If I recall correctly, you actually need to click a mouse button to make it revert.
It won't come back on it's own.

It's plugged into the Scan Doubler one (I think as that's the smaller of the two cards).  I tried plugging it into the other one but it didn't show anything at all although the monitor light was green as if it was receiving a signal.  The driver is just the CV64 one.#

Cheers guys

Here's how I've got mine configured.

1. Monitor plugged into the output from the scandoubler.
2. Scandoubler linked to CV643D by small ribbon cable
3. CVision3D monitor driver in devs/monitor also Pal driver in devs/monitor. No other monitor drivers.
4. P96 Mode configured as follows

1024x768 256 Colors H:57 KHz V:70hz clock 75.17 MHz - this mode works for me.

1024x768 HiColor H:51 KHz V:63Hz Clock 70.40 MHz - this mode works.

Try these values and see what happens. These work for me on my CRT, 15" LCD and 17" LCD. My LCD's are IIyama Prolite E383S for the 15" and Hyundai L73D for the 17". The CRT is a LG Studioworks.

Hope this helps.

Weed.

PS I can send you my P96 config file if you want to give it a go.
