GVP again producing Amiga hardware?
« on: November 09, 2009, 02:47:45 PM »
Browsing the internet I found http://www.gvp-m.com/

It looks to me like they are still or again producing various accelerators for the Amiga. At $495 for the Amiga 4000 / 68060 / 64MB board this is not even a bad price, given that I've seen Cyberstorm MK2's go for €300+ on Ebay...

Is it a hoax, extremely outdated site? Or should everybody looking for an upgrade consider buying it from GVP?

GVP went bankrupt in '95.

Once booming GVP quietly goes bust. (Great Valley Products Inc.)
Philadelphia Business Journal | July 14, 1995 | Davis, Jessica

KING OF PRUSSIA - Great Valley Products Inc., a regular on the Philadelphia Business Journal's list of fastest-growing privately held companies until 1993, has quietly wound up its operations and dissolved.
At its peak in 1992 the computer peripherals company employed about 75 people and sold $31.2 million worth of merchandise. In November of that year, two venture capital firms announced plans to invest $5 million in the hot little company.
Great Valley, which built its business on peripherals for Commodore International Ltd.'s Amiga family of computers, planned to use the venture capital to help diversify its product line into peripherals for IBM-compatible personal computers.
But the diversification came too late.
Amiga-maker Commodore had already begun its downward slide that would lead to its bankruptcy last year.
Great Valley brought one PC peripheral to market, a video capture board, but it was unsuccessful. Other PC products under development were abandoned as Great Valley's revenues and prospects sagged.
A few months after the once $1 billion Commodore filed for voluntary liquidation in the spring of 1994, GVP's directors quietly decided to liquidate GVP.

It is not a hoax. GVP may be nonexistent but GVP-M is not. The pages are a bit outdated - home page comes up with this... this website was updated last on 27th of july 2008. Davideo, you need to hit refresh. Their products are available through SoftHut.

Pete,

The home page is as you stated but the price list (the important page) is still dated 2003 :furious:

As much as I know the 'M' in GVP-M stands for M-Tech and M-Tech created the E-Matrix 530 (DCE: Viper 530). Now if they put that on the market again then I would be a very happy boy!

I wonder if the semantics of such a board are actually available!

Been reading up on SoftHut, their site does not seem that up to date either.

I just sent an email to GVP-M, let's see what happens...

Hello GVP-M,

On your website you list various 68040 and 68060 accelerators for the Amiga 3000 and 4000. Is that information correct and are those orderable products?

If so, can you give me an updated price - possibly including shipping charges for one or more units to the Netherlands? Also I'm interested in the time it will take to ship units (are they in stock)...

Regards

IIRC there`s a thread from a few months ago about this.

I think they announced they were making a new run of boards or something like that.

EDIT: here`s the thread http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=41064&highlight=accelerators

The GVP-M.com website was set up a year after Great Valley Products liquidated itself.  It would be interesting to know what, if any relationship GVP-M has with the former GVP.

The contact on the domain is Michael Wojciechowski, but the name seems common, so it's hard to tell which one is him.  There's a student at Pennsylvania State University, that could be him, but I doubt he set up the website 13 years ago as that would have made him 8 or 9 at the time...

Not in this lifetime.
No business case for even a small production run.

Save some 500 € and write a nice post under "Marketplace"...that might actually work for you....

Geeze you guys... click through to the SoftHut website (from the GVP-M website) and you will see what GVP stuff is available to order.

Basic story as I recall it... Michael worked for GVP, GVP went bust, Michael decided to make some stuff on his own using GVP name, quality and familiarity, now makes the occasional batch of goodies and sells through SuftHut. The guy doesn't update his site that often - big friggin' deal.

If that's the case, is there someone here on the forum who got one of those TRex2 / '060 cards or any other card from GVP-M for that matter? Still think it's a reasonable price given the "Ebay Value" of these things...

The thread from Softhut is filled with people waiting for a very long time for their cards, would be nice to know the orders are filled and that they are happily humming along :-)

Last point, can this guy take the designs and remake those boards? Didn't the ownership of those designs get sold to someone after GVP went bust?
