Where there any AGA graphics card for the A500
« on: October 30, 2009, 09:57:14 AM »
After a year in this amiga world I never heard of such a device and therefore I do not believe there is one out there - however I thought of asking to see if maybe there where / or are some experimental projects like this one.

If there is nothing like this then what is the main limitation to the development of such a device? (apart from lack of interest, time and money :) )

Regards,
Sim085

I dont think there ever was one and i dont think its possible because the A500 has a 16 bit bus and the A1200/CD32/A4000 AGA amigas are 32 bit .

You could always try and stuff an A1200 motherboard into the A500 i guess , dont know if thats been done before .

Nice to see another Amiga user from Malta BTW ..

There were a few items such as the Graffiti by Individual Computers which helped with new graphics modes but I don't know of any AGA type card for the old OCS/ECS based computers ever being released.

Yes buying an A1200 would be nice. However I would never change the A500+ I have. This is the system I used to play with when I still was in primary and therefore I am more interested in upgrading it as much as possible rather then replace it.

Yes same here :) Wonder if there are any other Maltese Amiga Users around here! :)

There was a prototype of an AGA upgrade for the A500 by Phase 5 (who else?) that was shown at Amiga shows but never actually was released due to Phase 5 going out of business.  It had the AGA chips and a 68020 or 68030 and Simms on a PCB.  There are photos on the web somewhere!

Edit: it was from DCE and has PPC in addition to AGA. A photo is in the amiga.org gallery http://www.amiga.org/gallery/index.php?n=1242

This is about the ultimate you can do - except if you find a Cyberstorm PPC developer board which could be added into the Blizzard2060 accelerator (not been done afaik)
http://www.amiga.org/gallery/index.php?n=1801 (pics 1800-1807). Insane and hard to find parts.

Yes it is a good idea ... On this map server there is at least another one :) http://map.minimig.net/ (I am still not there however).

Yes I can see your list :) I have been thinking of buying an A1200 for a long time but so far I decided not to do so - until I have my A500+ fully upgraded at least!

Yes, I know - but those cards are rare as hen's teeth. Probably just only a couple left.

I do not remember where exactly have I read this (was some thread over here or English Amiga Board) - but I remember that someone mentioned some software solution to use AGA on ECI boards which where not so good. I will try to find that thread!

Edit: Nop, I remembered wrongly. I was referring to this thread but here they discuss a graphics card not software.

The developer PPC boards don't look that complicated. http://amiga.resource.cx/photos/photo2.pl?id=powerup&pg=3&res=med&lang=en

What would it take to reproduce one? itd be alot easier than tryignto reproduce a Cyberstom PPC.
