Red Screen on Startup
« on: October 29, 2009, 03:19:00 PM »
Hey Guys...

When I have this Deskjet printer on, and the A4k is turned on right after, sometimes I get a red flashing screen, sometimes I don't. Could this be a faulty printer, or something wrong with the parallel cable or, parallel port on my A4k? Very strange! My Epson printer doesn't do that at all..
A4K: \\\'060, Cyberstorm MKIII Cybervision 64/3D w/ Scandoubler, Buddha Flash XSurf, MP3@64, A4K: \\\'040, Toaster, Y/C, A1200: Apollo \\\'040, A1200 GVP \'030, A1200: Stock, A2000: 68K, Trump SCSI, Supra 8Mb, and Toaster 4K, A2500: \\\'030, GVP SCSI, Supra 8MB x2, Video Toaster, CD32, Minimig, Efika and Hopefully an A4000T soon!

As far as I know, a red screen at boot means there's something wrong with the kickstart rom...
Try pushing down those chips (two chips on A4000, I think), to prevent bad contacts.
Or may be that printer drains too much power from the parallel port data lines... and It becomes on a malfunction of the rom chips, they are power munchers in the way they are connected on the amiga, with the CS signal permanently tied to ground.

As far as I recall, the colour codes are:

Grey: All tests passed
Red: Kickstart error
Green: Chip Ram error
Blue: Custom chip error
Yellow: Software failure before error traps (Guru handling code) have been installed by the OS
White: CPU error?
int p; // A

But it only happens with the printer on. If it's off, no red screen!

Yes, but, as I sugested, I could be a power problem. The printer could be drainig too much current from the data (or control) pins. It could be a bad cap, a bad isolation, or watherver on the printer side.
If the printer drains too much power, but not enought to get the A4000 down, the first things to fail are the most "power hungry" chips, as roms, and even some datapath drivers (74LS/F245, 74LS/F373, etc...).
I saw such simptoms on other computers.
On the A4000 side, It could be a bad cap, but It would fail with or without printer...
