68060 on a 68040 Accelerator card?
« on: November 08, 2003, 12:58:02 AM »
If the pinouts for the 040 and 060 chips are the
same, and the only difference is the core voltage
(3.3 vs 5.0) has anybody ever successfully modified
 a 68040 accelerator card to accept a 68060?

It looks like all you'd have to do is change a Voltage
 regulator and the clock crystal.

Ok someone with more experience shoot me down now

Im sure this came up in another thread.

The frequency isnt a problem, a 25MHz 040 uses a 50MHz signal, a 50MHz 060 also uses a 50MHz signal.

There are socket converters for this already available but they are expensive.

I once did some research on this too. It's been a long time so I can't recall all the details. But I recall there were logic and/or timing issues as well as the voltage restrictions with 040 cards that twarted just plugging in an 060 in an 040 space. But I'm no authority, so if some one else has more info, I'd love to see it too. And off the subject a bit, this site has alot of Amiga CPU info for overclocking if you haven't seen it already...

Oh yeah, Karlos just reminded me. Sonnet sells CPU socket adapter upgrades for macs, but I've read were some  have used them in amigas with success. I don't know if they have an 040<>060 though. They do have an 040 speed doubler. Check their site here > Sonnet

Are ther any web pages of people who have tried the
 Sonnet QuadDoubler mod?

I'd like to see what problems they encountered

Providing you can remove the 68040, I can not see a reason that a card like the Apollo 040 could take an 060.

I have mostly reverse engineered my Apollo 040 and aside from the voltage problem (easily fixed) you need to move a few jumpers and voila!

Anyone know where I could get a cheap 68060?
I have the tools to do this job, just need the part.

This guy has been selling them on eBay for 14 dollars
He does not have any up right now, but here is the link
 to the one I bought.

G'day Fellas,

Just to add something interesting to this discussion..   I recently bought a Blizzard A1260 accel off ebay, that has a factory fitted '040.

Not sure if I can just replace the chip or not.. temped to grab one of those cheap '060's off ebay and try it!

Has any one seen this thing?

http://www.emulation.com/catalog/off-the-shelf_solutions/production-test_adapters/upgrade_motorola/

It is an adapter socket to use a 060 in an 040 socket, looking
at the circuit in the middlle, it looks like it has it's own voltage
 regulator built in.

It's really expensive though
