They did not win, they settled with Amiga Inc with a new agreement.  Thanks to a Moo linking to a  /. article about the settlement, I see that Haynie posted his thoughts: http://news.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1409045&cid=29796239

Good read, if not a disparaging one. I disagree about AmigaOS being too far behind to be relevant though. I thought that was very shortsighted of him. We all know what's possible when you combine talent, money and other incentives. Great strides can be and are often literally created over night in this industry. When not, that's what "service packs" are for. lol

We and AmigaOS are irelevant to the computing world. We are a niche. Which is gwrtting smaller all the time.
 
If it took hyperion 8 years or whatever is was to get from 68k to PPC (Not the bigest of leaps) then how long do you reckon it will take them to do 68k to x86 or ppc to x86 or x64, another ten years.
 
I really don't understand why everyone thinks hyperion are/will be the saviours of AmigaOS, because they are clearly not.

EDIT:  By the way I think MorphOS has the same problems in sticking with expensive old and hard to come by hardware that is dead as a desktop platform

Maybe, when they ported it to PPC, they did it with portability in mind?

(For the record, I love PPC and don't mind staying there.)

Bah, Amiga was never cheap. And if we really wanted the best we would have an IBM Power6 based Amiga, not Intel/AMD x86 crap. MacMini G4 running AmigaOS/Morphos is not bad for a niche/retro machine. What should Hyperion do is rethink the whole AmigaOS idea, endorse innovate project and ideas,  and provide a platform for retromaniacs, alternative content creators, and open-minded developers that would also "steal" user-base from platforms such as BeOS, RiscOS, and Linux. Hardware is important for a quick start, but it's the software that should lead the way.

Agreed and it's definitely keeping this notion of an "AmigaOS" as niche and tiny as possible. Perhaps they fear becoming more successful? lol

Basically you have a somewhat modernised closed source OS with little or software to run.  It's basically a hobby OS for people who like retro with a few modern conveniences tacked on. Your target audience is known, they basically all read Amiga.org and/or Amigaword.net.  Now considering that why bother with porting to x86?  Is anyone seriously going switch from a modern OS to this?  The market is collectors, the market has money and the relative expense only makes it more attractive.

Don't get me wrong I am not saying that MorphOS or AOS should be ported to X86,X64 or ARM.  Its never going to compete in any real world market.  Keep it where it is.  I say stop dreaming that  Amiga will ever be what it was and what we loved.  It wont and cant happen.  Love it for what it is now .

Well done to Hyperion on securing the rights to develop the OS without interference.

I'm left wondering what Amiga Inc. got out of the settlement.
