Does anyone know what monitor the A500 came with default?

first models : 1081, later 1084 (15,62 kHz in pal version)
or 1084 S for stereo speakers

What I really liked about the 1084 was that
you could sit in front of it forever and
suffer very little eyestrain. Most monitors now
seem to make my eyes bleed after an hour or so.

Yeah, the 108x monitors (and other TV frequency monitors) have a slower phosphor coating than VGA tubes.

You can view perfectly acceptable 50Hz modes with those "TV" monitors, but if you try and run a VGA tube at 50Hz, it'll flicker so much you'll get a headache in no time.
