BBS Software
« on: October 12, 2009, 08:29:30 PM »
Greetings:

I am not sure if this post should be here or in software, but I think it better fits here.

I am wondering what is the best BBS software that was on an Amiga?  Was there one that also supported TCP/IP as well as Modems... When I ran my system back in the day, it was on a PC running RemoteAccess 2 and recently I acquired a license (transfer) for MajorBBS on the PC platform, but I thought it would be cool to find the software for Amiga.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks -- If you were a sysop, I definitely want to hear from you.

There are still a couple bbs online running Ami-Express, one running Fame, and a few using C-net.

Ok, now it seems I remember C-Net being kind of the BBS software of choice, but I have downloaded AMI Express and C-Net 3.05c.  On the PC side, I was good friends with a sysop who ran PC-Board.  Hopefully the AMI stuff will be as fun.

Thanks for the replies.

I ran an Amiga BBS here in Texas for some time in the early and mid 90s before the Internet boom and used CNET when it was under Perspective Software, with ISDN. For a time during that I had the 486 bridgeboard running Wildcat from Mustang Software with a null-modem hookup to one of the GVP or ADSG serial boards that you could connect to through a mod that could dial out to other BBS' through CNET. (I forget how many phone lines I had, it was more than 3) This was using a A2000 with a GVP Tekmagic 060 w/128 MB, 12 GB of SCSI drives and a cdrom changer ( I forget how many discs it could hold, I think it was 7, it was from Plextor)

The only thing I have left of all that is the A2000 with the accellerator, hard drives and the serial boards and the software.

I never messed with the TCP/IP but really liked CNET.

I ran Ami-Express from 88-97. At the peak I had 3 nodes ringdown and one telnet node. Towards the end it just wasn't fun anymore and I shut it all down and didn't touch an amiga for 10 + years. Then about 2 years ago I was home at my parents for Christmas and found my amiga stuff up in the attic and brought it all back with me. I have since put the bbs back online for nostalgia. 3 or 4 calls a day are a far cry back from in the day but it is fun again!

In my opinion CNet Amiga Pro was the best BBS system. Their website is here:

Don27dog is being modest folks... His board is up and better than ever!

If you wanted fidonet and all that stuffy professional stuff you went with C-net.

Of course... If you were in the scene, there was only one type of BBS to run and that was Ami-Express!

Before Ami-express I ran sigma-express, Tempest and BBS-PC! but am currently back on the old faithful!

If you want to get back into the BBS scene from an Amiga, I recommend the DCtelnet software.

I dabbled a bit with MaxsBBS. From what I remember it was quite easy to set up.

I currently have a CNet Pro BBS configured and setup, but it's currently offline because I have little time to run it. But if you want to access it, PM me and we can hash out a time I can have it running for you.

It's also setup for FidoNet and AmigaNet networks. Both of which are active even today.

The BBS's website is http://bbs.amigaz.org

Setup an account with a dynamic ip service like dyndns.org. Works great for me. I even had my domain name pointed to it.

Then use one of the programs they suggest to automatically update your IP if it changes.

Unless you are paying for a private IP address then you don't have a private IP address. You are in a POOL of dynamically assigned IP addresses. Do as the poster above stated and you will be fine. Don't worry about your IP address, just get your domain setup and let their utility track your IP address changes and route your domain name over through dyndns.org. Of course you will have set your home router / firewall up to NAT port 23 (telnet) to the system running your bbs.

I ran a BBS for about 5 years from 1990 to 1995. The system received about 100 calls a day on an A2000 with GVP 030/40 running CNET v3.05 I think it was. The A2000 is still working and is sitting in my basement however the HD went on it. I did manage to BA k it up to my PC and was able to boot it up with WinUAE. As an avid BBS'er of the 90's, it is my opinion that CNET was one of the best out there as far as BBS programs go.
