Questions on different File Systems.

Hi,

I was trying to install a software (MultiUser from aminet) that patches the FastFileSystem in L: however when I entered in L: I found out that I do not have this but rather the CrossDOSFileSystem!

So my questions are these; Which one is the latter (I have workbench 3.1)? and (if needed) how can this be changed?

They are two different things.

CrossDOS enables the Amiga to read PeeCee floppys properly.

FastFileSystem is the "format" used by the Amiga, for disk access.

FastFileSystem won't be found in L: on OS 3.1, because it's located in the kickstart ROM. (Though updated versions can be found there in later OS releases.) CrossDosFilesystem is just an included filesystem that allows you to mount and read/write from PC formatted floppies.

You could probably use the RomSplit tool from Doobreynet to grab your ROM, separate the FastFileSystem module, apply the multiuser patch, then stick it in your L: drawer.

PFS3 also includes a multiuser version, though I've never tried it.

So if FastFileSystem is in L: then Workbench will use that one rather then the one in the ROM? (ROM means Kickstart right?)

AmigaOS will use the FastFileSystem from RDB, if none is found there it'll use the ROM one.

L:FastFileSystem isn't directly used ever (how is the OS supposed to read a file from the filesystem when the filesystem isn't loaded yet?) but it's what HDToolBox copies to RDB.

Sorry, should have mentioned you will have to update the RDB. As Zac67 pointed out, a filesystem in L: won't automagically be used.

Use HDToolBox or HDInstTool, and select the filesystem from wherever your patched version is located (normal place to put them is L: drawer).

Just make sure to read the docs, I don't know if a reformat is required when changing the filesystem to the patched multiuser version... though it would be easy to recover, you probably don't want the added PITA of your data disappearing.

Dunno - what versions do the multiuser patches support? the multiuser archive on aminet looks fairly old.

It supports the FastFileSystem versions released on all versions of Workbench from 2.04 upto 3.1 - I checked the install disk of Workbench 3.1 and I found it there under L: So I am gona use this one

Cool! Didn't know it was on the 3.1 floppy (DOH!), glad you found it without much hassle.
