OS4 on Amiga 1200?
« on: December 09, 2002, 05:29:30 PM »
Hello,

I am just recently trying to get back into Amiga.  I've only owned a stock A500 and stock A2000HD.

I want to get an A1200, but want to know if I can make this machine capable of running OS4.  Or should I just stick with OS3.9?

As far as the AmigaOne, there is no way I could afford one of these unless a complete tower was for like $400.

Thanks,

Neofree

Well, it was stated that OS4 should be able to run on the current PPC cards (BlizzardPPC and CyberstormPPC).

But AFAIK the A1200/BlizPPC version still isn't 100% sure. The Cyberstorm version is though. OS4 will first be released for Cyberstorm, then A1 and then for BlizPPC.

So you see OS4 only runs on PPC, not 68k, for that stick to OS 3.x.

Thank you for fast reply.  So how much are the Cyberstorm PPC cards?

Thank you,

If you don't already have your A1200 + a PPC card for it then you'd be better off saving for an A1 if you really wan't os4.0.  Upgrading an A1200 to the required level would cost too much (unless you find a fool who doesn't realize what value his ancient hardware still has)

I have found good prices on upgraded A1200's.  But none with PPC accellerators.  Only the A1230 type.  Do you have a site or two that sells these PPC accel's?

An A1 is simply out of the question right now.  I hope that it does good and the price comes down, I really hope Amiga reclains it's name in the modern computer market.

Thanks,

http://www.amibench.org/ is a good source for second hand amiga products.

I believe that both KDH and Vesalia in
Germany sell new PPC accellerators, but they're
very expensive. Even the top 68k accel. will
still set you back about $300 USD. For
OS3.9 and old games, a 1230 and some memory
would be fine.

You could hope, that someone who gets the A1, will sell their old PPC-A1200...

@neofree:

Just to make sure: CyberstormPPC cards are for A3000 and A4000. BlizzardPPC cards are for A1200. And I really have no idea what they cost nowadays (new or secondhand). I bought my BlizzardPPC  in 98 for ~400EUR, the most basic model that is.

I made the huge error of not getting a BlizzardPPC with onboard SCSI.

Any other reason than obvious SCSI superiority (sea AND land)?

I kept a vigil on eBay and picked up a whole A1200 PPC Tower set up for $900.  It was a lot to lay out a couple months back, but I have since broken my A2000 setup into its component pieces and sold them on eBay.  I think when everything was said and done, my upgrade cost me in the neighborhood of $400.

I have a Blizzard 603e/240Mhz w/SCSI and 256M RAM.  The RAM was my main reason for it.  I had a GVP 040/33 Combo A2000.  I was very happy with it, but to upgrade it from 16M to 64M was going to run me roughly $100/16M SIMM or $400.  I never have RAM issues now and do not regret my choice.

I will get an A1 and OS4 when it comes out, but if it takes months more to materialize.. it won't bother me.

With this setup I can play very large 100+meg MPEG video files with sound surf the web, my amiga is connected to a cable modem.. life is good.

Bottom line: it would be better for you to wait for an A1 (if you can afford to get one), but when will it ever arrive?  I waited years and years.  Rumors said new systems.. then nothing.. new systems.. and nothing.  I am most happy with my decision.. and I only bought this system 10 months ago.
