My Computer Icon in Win2K
« on: November 03, 2003, 05:48:37 PM »
Is there a program to hide the My Computer icon from the desktop?  I want to have seperate icons for each drive on the desktop itself and get rid of the My Computer icon totally.

I'm getting annoyed going into My Computer then C: or wherever, I just want to go straight into C: .

I don't think so.  The closest I can think of is a solution to remove all icons from the desktop.

However, a google search found this:

http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1043/

However, just like with removing Network Neighbourhood/My Network Places from the desktop, there are probably consequences.

I think maybe you should check that first :-)  TweakUI 1.33 doesn't have an option for Win2k to remove the My Computer icon.

Sorry for being off-topic, but this has been bugging me, what are the consequences of removing the Network Neighbourhood/Places icon?

I've downloaded TweakUI 2000 and it doesn't have an option for hiding My Computer.  It can hide/show specific drives within My Computer, but it can't get rid of the desktop icon itself.

@mikeymike

I'm not too keen on changing the registry myself for this. :-)

@tpk

I've got Network whatever hidden on my 2k box and it's had no consequences (yet ;-) ).

if I threw out the pc that means I'd be surfing the net on a 640 * 256 free version of AWeb in 256 colours.  No thanks :-P

I already have Dopus 5.5 on my A1200, I also have 5.8, but I uninstalled that after it almost crippled my chip ram.  I have os3.9 though :-)

I already know how to hide/show icons on the Miggy :-P :-D

You know, this is the best place to ask for PC help because you don't get patronising people telling you that you're useless and then giving you completely stupid replies that don't work.  All this from people who think they are above you when all they're trying to do is put one-up on each other :-P

This is an Amiga USER forum.  I'm an Amiga USER, it's just unfortunate that some of us need to use PC's from time to time :-(

Anyway, rant over with, let's get back to the point ;-)

@Vincent

You're right - people are helpful here, and realise that all of us must use a PC some time...

Sorry for being off-topic, but this has been bugging me, what are the consequences of removing the Network Neighbourhood/Places icon?

copied from Tweak UI help, though I don't think this is the full extent of the issue:

"Consequences of hiding Network Neighborhood
Since shell support for the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) notation is handled by the Network Neighborhood, hiding the Network Neighborhood icon will prevent Explorer from accessing resources via UNCs.  In order to access network resources from Explorer, you need to map them to a drive letter.  Note that the MS-DOS command prompt and other applications are not affected by this setting, because they do not use the Network Neighborhood to resolve UNCs.

In particular, hiding the Network Neighborhood prevents Direct Cable Connection from displaying the contents of the host computer. Aside from this, Direct Cable Connection functions normally."

IIRC, on Win9x, it would affect network/Dial-up authentication, but then a stiff breeze could blow over network configs on Win9x.

I can't find an MS support article on the issue.

I've downloaded TweakUI 2000

"TweakUI 2000"?  MS's TweakUI is currently at v1.33.
