Connect an IDE HD to an A500?
« on: August 27, 2009, 08:02:49 PM »
It seems that using my A1200 as a gaming machine (at least for the games I have, mostly) is one big FAIL, even without the 040 accelerator.

I have an A500 (KS 1.2, +512k expansion) in storage, and provided that the battery hasn't melted it, hopefully it still works.

It would be nice, especially since I have a fair few IDE hard disks (2.5" and 3.5") available, to be able to set it up with one.  I'm wondering if this is possible, preferably cheaply.

- edit - or a compact flash card....

I've got one in my 500, it's pretty great.  I opted to use a CF card instead of the IDE port, however.

Last batch was something like 60 euros each.  The next bunch was possibly going to be redesigned to have RAM onboard as well, no idea how that'd change the price if it happens.

Does an A500 have room to house a 3.5" IDE HD internally?

I realise some extra wiring would be involved in getting power to it.  I'm balancing up the need for extra memory versus the risk of letting me loose with a soldering iron for the first time since secondary school :)

Does this need any hardware hacks? (Such as solder this here and there?)

Two or three.. After all the 3.5" floppy drive is that size too. Power will be your biggest problem.

Then again, why not just use a CF card and be happy..

I dunno, WHDload solved most of my compatability woes, and allowed me to HDinstall loads of games. What problem are you having with the A1200?

I didn't have much luck until I went over to WHDLoad (as others have mentioned)...  After going over to that I wouldn't go back...   Just about everything works for me, and it's super easy...  Never turn on my A500 anymore...
