It certainly works with OS 3.x. I have an A1200 connected to my router using a PCMCIA NIC. I'm using cnet.device, it works fine.

You might also need cardreset, depending on your PCMCIA behaviour.

For OS3.1, I'd basically recommend AmiTCP. It doesn't do DHCP, but if you are plugging it into a router where you can more or less guarantee what address it's going to get, that isn't a problem. Under 3.9, a tcp/ip stack is included, but I'm still using AmiTCP nonetheless.

I don't really do a lot of web browsing under 3.1, (I rarely boot into 3.1 except for testing), so I can't really recommend a browser. Both IBrowse and AWeb have been left a long way behind current web standards.

The only Amiga web browser I'm using these days is OWB on OS4. I do believe an older version of this exists for 680x0, but I haven't tried it.

Good luck browsing the web on an unexpanded A600 or A1200! I have 4MB Fast RAM on my A1200 and I still need to turn image loading off to browse the web or I run out of memory. I imagine you'd barely be able to load a browser in 2MB Chip RAM, at least not IBrowse or AWeb (forget OWB, it is only good for 060/PPC/PC).

You really need more RAM, or better yet, an accelerator with heaps more RAM to enjoy browsing the web and going online on an Amiga.

It IS enjoyable though, once you've got everything set up right! SabreMSN, WookieChat, AmiGift, AmiNetRadio and even IBrowse (though it's old now) rock!

Even the oldest Aweb version needs 3Mb of RAM.
Goodbye people.

Hi!

I remeber the last time I did that on one of my friend's A500, 1MBchip + GVPHDD+8MB and a 56k Flex modem, with a KSROM2.01. Installed Workbench 2.1 then MUI3.7, Miami, and for his browser, Alynx... I remeber downloading stuff from Aminet using it. Check yahoo email. That was back in 2002. Not sure if I can replcate the same feat or do that on an A600. :insane: Sounds interesting... ;)

I wrote a little guide to using a wireless card on Amiga 600/1200, which seems the cards are in more abundance than a 16bit 10/100 card nowadays. On the guide, there is a link to "how to install AmiTCP" which I think you will find excellent (not written by me!)

I must have missed the "not expanded" bit.

I wouldn't recommend doing anything with an unexpanded A1200 except playing the odd game from floppy. Try and get an accelerator card if possible, or at least a 4MB trapdoor RAM expansion (which won't affect your PCMCIA slot). Really, it will make a lot of difference.

I really don't think is possible to browse anything with just 2mb... It's even sorta short only speaking about video memory... So i do figure you really need at least 4mb of FastRam in order to browse something around.

No problem. Whilst an A600/unexpanded A1200 isn't much fun for web browsing, it is useful for apps like ssh/ftp/irc etc.

Here is my A600 runnning Grapevine IRC client, with the TCP stack and some extra apps such as blanker and noclick and still managing to give me 1MB free RAM:
