MAGIC WB Nag Screen...how do I register??
« on: August 23, 2009, 06:26:31 AM »
I just installed Magic WB and everytime I turn on Amiga, I get the "register" nag screen.  I attempted to register but it seems like it isn't sold anymore.  How do I take care of this situation?

maybe the author can release it if no longer interested in orders.

I gave up on trying to register.. so I just did it the old school way.  I ended up wiping my config (E-UAE) and no longer use MagicWB so my pirated key went out the door w/MagicWB

That's a good argument for deprecating MUI (and other toolkits where licensing is a single of failure), too.

IIRC you can delete S:mti.data (hmm.. that might actually be that occasional splash screen), or find an alternative to the MagicWB-Demon on Aminet. I don't think the last public release of MWB had any real limitations, but maybe try FullPalette or similar if you can't get rid of registration reminders.

There is ZUNE if you are worried about that, or maybe you have a better alternative?

What makes you think MUI has this problem? It doesn't.

Does anybody here know of an equivalent alternative to Magic WB?  I am looking for somthing that looks more attractive that the typical grey/white workbench.  Also, the lighter it is on system resources the better.  Thanks.

I've found all it takes is a nice background image to make a boring desktop come alive.
3 Commodore file cabinets, 2 Commodore USB turntables, 1 AmigaWorld beer mug
Alienware M14x i7 laptop running AmigaForever

I changed the colorful background image on my A3000D to a nice grey stucco pattern rendered with Forge/Essence.

(I meant single *point* of failure, of course....)

Are you sure? Are commercial software developers no longer required to pay an arbitrary registration fee to use and redistribute MUI? Reading between the lines, Stefan's goal was to create a new user interface standard that allowed him to share in the profits of all future Amiga-based commercial software offerings. (Actually, I'm just paraphrasing the text at http://www.sasg.com/mui/policies.html and not really reading between the lines.)

If registrations and contract negotiations for commercial software developers are no longer possible for some reason, then no one can create commercial software using MUI, regardless of how the end user obtains the MUI user archive. :-/

I'm just being grumpy. :-) As a user, I never liked how many third party widgets I had to install to get a mostly functional Amiga system up and running. As a developer, I try to stick to what a vanilla operating system installation provides.

@Golem!dk

Zune requires AfA, doesn't it?

Quite sure, yes

I'm fairly sure they're not. Why not ask Stefan himself (quoting the same document: "Just contact me and ask."), he's quite reachable guy (when he's not mountainbiking around the world, see http://www.alpenzorro.de/).

That document is very very old.

MUI comes as a standard component in various OSes.
