Time to reset the arcade?
« on: August 13, 2009, 04:48:46 PM »
Sitting here looking at the arcade, and I'm wondering if it's time to level the playing field by way of resetting the scores.

Might be good to get people back into playing harder.  Whattaya think?

Sorry, didn't realize English was confusing...

"What do the players in the arcade think about resetting the scores in order to give everyone better motivation to keep playing?"

Work better?

Noooooooooooo, you can't do that to me just because I am good!

Well if the scores are reset, it won't make a difference. Adz and I will still have an ongoing Mahjong battle, Ilwrath and Sandy will own the Tetris, and I'll definitely own the Asteroids.

You guys gotta take me down sometime, whether it is now or later ;)

Wayne, a good plan might be to retire some of the games and get new ones in. Obvious candidates for retirement are Bugz, Breakout, Starship Legend and Mission to Mars. They have a kind of short appeal and only hardcore fools like me play them, I reckon.

I saw a nice flash game on another site called Meeblings. Similar to Lemmings, very nicely executed. If you can get that, it would be great!

Oh, I didn't know there was an arcade here, I thought it was some comment on the anti-health care activities the insurance companies are doing in the US, never mind.

Speaking of which, I just can't get anywhere near your latest score, I figure you must have finished it in under three minutes. On one game, I got down to the last four tiles at two minutes twenty, but damn it the tiles were stacked wrong :madashell:

Wayne,  I'd say reset the Arcade scores if you wish.... I'm pretty lame, I guess.. the only one I ever got a high score in was Space Invaders, after losing, I tried again a few times, and then, yup, I lost interest...:(

And I agree, some new games would be nice.....

Now that I know about the arcade, now would be an ideal time to reset the scores! :-P

The arcade scoreboards are accumulating some cruft, for sure.  I wouldn't be against flushing them out every so often.  My only thought is it would be kind of cool to keep an "all time highest score" noted somewhere, just for recording of the epic wins that may be unlikely to be repeated.  It certainly doesn't need to be live... It could even be just a little flat text file tucked away somewhere.  Each time before the high scores are flushed, check if the current high score is higher than the "all time highest score" and update, if necessary.

But I think a main arcade reset every so often, and letting the live scoreboards, trophies, and "champion" designations be for the current leaders of each game is a good idea.  It is kind of funny how all the trophies gravitated to be divided up between a handful of people.  As X-Ray said, I suspect there will probably be a lot of the "usual suspects" dominating their respective games again after a short while...  But in the meantime, it'll be a fresh slate for everyone.  Sounds like a good thing, to me.
