Networking A1200 and Linux PC
« on: July 29, 2009, 10:54:05 PM »
Hi,

Quite a while ago I posted a topic asking what the best way to link an A500+ and a Linux PC would be, and I was just wondering if, now I have an A1200, there are more/better methods than using a serial null modem cable.

Were there ever Ethernet cards or anything like that available for the A1200? Are there any PCMCIA cards that work with freely available drivers/utilities?

Thanks, Matt

Amitcp's ncftp client and the proftpd server on the linux side works well i use that here, there could be compatibility issues with some servers. Using a 3com 3c589c, you will have to alter a configuration file in amitcp for it to work but it does. ( IE. tell amitcp you have the first NIC on the list, find the file in amitcp: containing the network adapter name and driver, replace the driver part with the correct 3com driver. )

This worked for me:

A copy of cnet.device for the driver, AmiTCP for the network stack. During installation of AmiTCP, lie and say you have a 2065, then modify the configuration files post install to point it to cnet.device instead of a2065.device.

Plug it into your router and install smbfs. Create a samba share on your Linux box and you are good to go.

Thanks for the advice! Too bad I'll have to wait for ages until I can afford an Ethernet card; I'm already running a massive debt up with my mother vis-a-vis Amiga parts =P (workbench 3.1 disks being the latest addition)

Interesting picture Karlos, I had never thought of anyone having an A1200 tower conversion with the A1200 original case still attached to the A1200 motherboard!

@hayashi, if you are going to continue your Amiga hobby, I think you had better get a job, or a better paying job if you already have one.  Amigas are very expensive these days compared to other computer platforms. (but well worth the price)
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

Especially as compatible cards cost EUR 5 or less...

Hmm... Could anyone give me, like, a list or something (or just one or two would be fine) of highly compatible Ethernet card models to look out for?

Thanks in advance.

It's just the underside of the wedge. The top was removed, of course.

3com 3c589 should be easy enough to find.
3 Commodore file cabinets, 2 Commodore USB turntables, 1 AmigaWorld beer mug
Alienware M14x i7 laptop running AmigaForever

I second that one. I use it myself in my A1200 and it costs next to nothing. Anything more than EUR 5 is way overpriced.

It's a well built and reliable card.
