CD-Rom drive on Workbench 1.3 ????
« on: October 31, 2003, 02:28:38 AM »
Is it possible to use a CD-Rom drive on an Amiga 2000 running Workbench 1.3?  If so, What must I do, step by step.  What version of AmiCDFS do I use?

Yes I am sure you can fit a SCSI one no doubt. As for the driver / filesystem you might find its OS2.04 or above only.

Why do you want to use a CD on your Amiga2000? I find CDs are much better on their native platform...

You're going to have trouble finding decent pre-2.0 drivers. Of course, you could just upgrade your ROMs, or get a ROM-switcher. Kick 1.3 nostalgia is all well and good, but if you want to use modern software and drivers, a 16-year-old operating system won't do.

I think only very old versions of the CD file systems out there will work. As far as I know, there's no CD-based software for WB1.3 anyway. I'm not seeing the point of this experiment.

Well, there was the A570... and CDTV. But nothing new...

Edit: Yes, I meant A570 all along ;-)

The CD-Rom drive in my Amiga 2500 works really well.  It has Kickstart / Workbench 2.04.  One of my Amiga 2000 computers has Workbench 1.3 on it.  That is the Amiga that I want to use the CD-Rom drive on.  I am beginning to actually like Workbench 1.3 better then 2.04, because all of my vintage games run on OS 1.3.  I also think that Workbench 1.3 looks nicer then 2.04.  Anyway, do any of you have a CD-Rom drive working on your Workbench 1.3 system?  Just because something is older does NOT mean that it is no longer any good.  For instance, most of the really good Amiga games will only run on Workbench 1.3.  I can not get them to work on Workbench 2.04.

I now have all of my over 1000 vintage Amiga games burned to a CD-R disc.  But, most of these games will only work on Workbench 1.3, so I need a CD-Rom drive on that system so I can read the CD-R disc on that computer.  My Amiga 2500 reads the CD just fine, but most of the games will not run on the 2.04 OS.

@DoomMaster,

Aw come on dude, I know imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and all that but you don't need to explain yourself...

Now I do recall you mentioning making a games compilation on CD...

One problem you may have is that many old games were designed to run from custom floppies that can boot but not be copied from amiagdos. No doubt you have seen a fair few if your vintage games collection is as extensive as you say.

Being totally serious for a moment, have you tried a package called WHDLoad? Basically it is a modular hard disk installation system that has installation patches available for hundreds of games, including all those ones that used dodgy custom boot code.

Most install patches fix the common OS1.3 <-> 2.x / 3.x incompatibilites and also common 680x0 CPU problems thus allowing you to not only install the games on your hard drive, but run them from OS2.x/3.x equipped 68040 A2500 ;-)

Try it, I am sure you will like it. What's more, you can then burn your installed games to CD for safe keeping :-)

Well ... I've been using 'XETEX CDX' installer for
10 years or so. Works great, and I think I was
running OS 1.3 when I first bought it. I am about
90% sure it will work with OS 1.3.
If you can find a copy, it should work for you.

Its a ultility called "Relokick 1.3", worked wonders on my A600 and A2000, used to work with my A1200 but now whenever I try to use any form of KS 1.3 on my A1200, it just "green screens" and resets  :-(

Or if Parnet's too slow, put the 1.3 hard drive into the 2.04's SCSI chain, copy 'em there, and move the drive back.
