Boing Bag 2 - ROM Update
« on: July 27, 2009, 03:40:59 PM »
I am just curious how this works.  Does this "update" to the ROM occur after the real ROM is loaded from the chips?  I am not incorrect in that 3.1 ROMS are not editable, right?  It must be loading it when workbench starts up?

I'm just curious because I was informed that I can use Deneb as my primary mouse (including the boot screen) but only if I install Boing Bag 2 Rom update, but I don't understand how it would update the rom on cold boot.

Looks kinda like this:

System boots from 3.1 ROMs on motherboard, then very early in the bootup it loads the ROM image that comes with BB 2, after which it reboots once more to run from the softkicked ROM.

I'm getting tired of hearing my WarpEngine chime twice on every power-up of my 3000T.. Where's a set of those 3.9 ROMs when you need one...

It works by copying newer versions of rom modules into RAM. When the system initializes the modules, it checks the version numbers and only the new ones will be running.

So only after a warm boot. When you power on the machine, the updated modules are still on your hard drive.

Has anyone ever tried burning these new rom images to actual physical ROMs to make it all easier.  For example, I want to be able to use my Deneb USB Mouse immediately from the kickstart screen without having a hard drive in the machine.

Yes, people can make their own customised KS roms, but that is not necessary for you to use your mouse straight away with Deneb. Put the mouse driver in the flash rom of Deneb... look at the docs that came with the installation software...

Anyone know how to do this?  Sounds like what you are saying is that I could put the whole new Boing-Bag 2 Rom and Poseidon USB Mouse drive in the Deneb ROM to get this working?

Yes, and you use the Luciferin programme to do just that. Flash the individual modules you want into Deneb, reset psdromtags and reset the computer...
