Accelorator options for A4000
« on: July 22, 2009, 08:26:29 PM »
Good afternoon everyone,
I have a nice A4000D with a video Toaster/Flyer all mounted in a tower. It has a non standard riser that gives me two video slots and about 6 ZorroIII slots. I have the standard 3640 CPU but was wondering if adding an accelerator is of any real benefit or should I look at some sort of graphics card that will add more chip ram? (if there is such a thing)

What are my options (if any) and what am I looking at paying. I do have the Indavison AGA installed as well.

Thanks

Mostly you're looking at used items listed online, and they generally run a few hundred bucks depending on the model.

If you want snappier Workbench with lots of colors, a video board would probably only cost half of what an accelerator would.

Is this for an accelerator or some sort of graphics card? What types will work for my A4000?
I knew a guy who had a Cyberstorm PPC060 in his A4000 but they were very expensive. I do not need a PPC.

Well you are going to notice a significant speed increase if you get an 060 accelerator and you might even be able to get a brand new one from Software hut. GFX card would speed things up too and software hut again might have some, can't hurt to check with them. http://www.softhut.com

Accelerators generally start around $300(USD here) and work their way up.  There are Cyberstorm cards that don't have PPCs available, as well as WarpEngines and T-Rexes... Whole list of them at http://amiga.resource.cx under Expansion.

WarpEngine '40 for the A4000 will give you upwards of 128mg ram expansion and a scsi header without taking up any zorro slots. The VT4000 relys on the AGA chipset to do it's magic. A grfx card will do no good for the VT/Flyer environment in adding chipram due to the way the VT functions.

How's that Indivision working out? Might concider on for my A4000D VT/Flyer, providing it dosen't "break" VT/Flyer operations.

You would almost certainly get more pleasure from a GFX card.

You can get a Picasso IV for about £150

It works fantastic! I have it hooked up to a Dell 17" LCD and it looks great. It works very well even using the Toaster screen modes.

Doesn't seem that outrageous, especially considering it's an actual Amiga hardware dealer.  I've seen other 060 cards sell in the $500 range on eBay.

However, it's quite possible they no longer have the item in stock.

Wow, http://www.softhut.com/cgi-bin/test/Web_store/web_store.cgi?page=catalog/hardware/accelerators/phase5_cyberstorm.html&cart_id=2416184_10360
This is a huge price for something like this. Are they joking!

Alert! Alert! Sticker shock settling in. No, they are not joking and yes, compared to current
PeeCee stuff, Amiga hardware *is* expensive comparatively. Forget about yachts and auto
collecting... Amiga computing is the new rich geeks hobby  :-)

I've got an 060 and I gotta tell you... I just love watching how fast the icons pop up on my
Workbench! I sometimes just hit the Preferences button in my dock, even if I've nothing to
change just to ooooh and aaahhh!  lol

Amiga 4000 accelarators are outrageously expensive. Then again, trying to get an accelarator for an Apple IIGS is just as bad. If not worse and even more uber rare would be trying to get a Second Sight video card for one of those. At least there are some people willing to part with Picasso IV's... Trying find an Apple addict that will part with there Apple IIGS's Second Sight card.

One of the biggest reasons for getting an accelerator for the A4000 is that the mobo Fast RAM is really SLOOOOW RAM and most accelerators have simm slots to add 64mb, 128mb, or 256mb of REALLY Fast RAM.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

Well the extremely slow RAM is one of the things that irk me about the girl. The other thing is the fact that the IDE setup for getting a IDE CDROM is horrendous. There are other things too, but those are some of my little ticks.
