Converting AT PSU into amiga :-)
« on: October 30, 2003, 08:16:04 AM »
Update on conversion :- Dudes! The conversion with the a1200 and the compaq desktop is coming along really well... but i have hit a flaw. I have done the actual case conversion, the mobo is ready to be screwed in, i have moved the PSU, angle grinded the case, mounted all the drives.. etc but the damm psu wont work unless there is a mobo attached to it (i thought this may happen).. Now i remember somewhere that there is a way to trick a PSU into thinking there is a motherboard on it.. Any ideas? Its one of the older PSU with the split mobo connecter on it. PS.. I have taken photos all the way through the conversion, so i will post them on a.org for you all to splender!

Very easy.. connect PowerGood (usually orange) with +12v (usually yellow), that's it. :-D

Connect up hard disc, floppy, cdrom to the power connectors, this should be more than enough load to power up the psu with out the mobo attached.

Aah!

The joys of non-standard power supplies.

Well the Info you require is probably in one of these Compaq technical manuals on this FTP site:

ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/supportinformation/techpubs/maintenance_guides/

Too many documents to search through though. It would probably take ages to find.

So I suggest you wait until someone else comes up with a better answer. :-)

Hmm its ok i have lots of PSU - i think either JC's fix or the one with the PowerGood is going to fix it - after all its just a standard PSU looking at it. The wires seem the same as the one on one of the above websites.

If it's a standard AT psu (then one of the cables going to the motherboard will have the color combination orange PwrGd, red +5V, yellow +12V, blue -12V, black Gnd, black Gnd) just wire up the PowerGood with any of the +12V whires. I've done that like on 4 AT PSU's by now and so far everyone have worked like a charm. If you can't find an orange line then it doesn't follow the AT standard but you can just open the PSU and look at it's board cause they usually mark it on there aswell (PG, PwG, PwrGd or simular). :-D
