I only use Amiga OS and Windoz...
Now take a guess whats my favorite...
Does anyone know how to fix the registery
for Windoz 98???
The only way I know it to wipe the drive clean
and re-install, which is a real pain in the butt.

That's a pretty generic question (especially on 9x).   If you have a little more information on what the possible cause (beside loading windows) is I might have some help for you. The most common fix I have found for that one (depending on what I did to it, and as you have stated) was to do the old fdisk and format routine.

Ok..
I recently had to do a re-install of win98.
The registry was messed up.

So after re-installing win98 I did a windows update.
that took about 2 hours on line.

My son had given me Norton System works.
So I installed and ran it.. BAD move.  
Explorer wouldn't run .. said I needed to re-install
windoz (dubble dam) so now I had to do a windoz
update again.
So I did and did an UN-install of Norton.

So I was going to do a CD Rom clone of my 'C'
drive. I was looking through the dir on 'C' to
see what I didn't need and found some Norton
stuff that didn't get un-installed and naturally
without thinking I deleted it.
Now I get an error on boot-up saying it is looking
for the Norton files I deleted.
How do I fix something like that

Reinstall System Works and then remove it from ADD/Remove on 9x. What version of 98 is it?

You're best bet is to do a reinstall, but I'd HATE to have to go through 2 hours for an updated again...

Mithalas is correct, though. FDisk and reformat is probably the way to go...

MS Registry is such trash.

Can you not go into the system startup (msconfig) and remove the norton entries??

press F8 at boot and choose "safe mode command prompt only"

There's a handy little DOS command on Win98 to manage the registry called SCANREG.

scanreg /fix
claims to fix registry corruption

scanreg /opt
claims to optimise/compact the registry

Well .. I tried the 'Scanreg' but no luck.

I did a google search on 'Symevnt.386' and
found that its a fairly common problem.
One guy had a solution 'Run his AntiVirus prg.'
It would fix the Norton problem ( I think NOT) :-x

I guess I'll just bite the bullet and wipe the drive
again. ( I'd really like to get a clean install and
clone it to CD Rom)
I guess this is the kind of stuff that makes
MicroSoft so endearing to everyone. :-(

Whenever you want to install some app that you don't trust, run regedit, export (save) your registry and install the application. If something goes wrong, you can easily replace new registry with old one. Scanreg thing... It's hardly going to repare anything, build by M$, it is just going to destroy your system more I'm overreacting maybe, but probability for this scenatio to happen is high Good tools for fixing win registry, and for everything else is Norton Utilities packet, just make sure it's for w98. When w2K came out, I installed NU for win 95/98NT4 on it and after fixing stuff, during first reboot I got blue screen of death. So, make sure NU supports your w98.

I think there are still registry entries for Norton, you can d/l and run this freeware utility   EasyCleaner
 it will find and display in a list all of the invalid registry entrys. You can delete them from the list.

A: it's a good way of doubling the size of your registry (if you do a "restore")

and B: exporting from regedit and importing won't delete keys that have been created.  It'll only restore keys that had gone missing.

No version of Win32 compacts its own registry.  If keys are deleted, the space left behind isn't cleaned up.  Scanreg for Win98 reportedly compacts the (win9x)  registry, but that's the only known method.

Yeah, but if he don't know what he's doing, it is likely that he will delete something that's gotta be there, and then reinstall, again. But, that is how it is

Are you saying that imporing previously exported *.reg would not bring it back to it's original state?
Then it appears that only way to do it to erase new keys is to go manually through regedit?

And about restore thing. I have only used it once when winMe came out. In that time I was working in printing company making designs and, if I remember correctly, winMe was bugging me to make restore point. So I did it. After a few days, something just goes wrong (nothing is weird with winMe), and I tried that "restore point" M$'s  miracle. After a while and a frenetic hdd work, everything pops up, in nice and working condition, except that I was missing around more than 60 designs and who knows what else. That is the last time I have used M$ stupidity called "restore point" s##t. It is good if you have nerves to make resdtore point every time before installation, tweaking, playing around, but is that the way how OS should work, making restore points every few hours?
