OS 3.0 to 3.1
« on: July 19, 2009, 06:23:49 PM »
It's been a while since I upgrades an OS...
Question, will installing 3.1 over 3.0 mess with any system or MUI settings or will the install be transparent?

Recently went through some of my [strike]junk[/strike] Amiga hardware and found 3.1 roms for my A1200. Pulled the A1200 apart and installed the ROMs. Put it all back togehter. The 1200 has been fully functional, the Apollo'40 battery needs to be replaced, unit in storage for several years. Want to be able to eventually set up a game machine for the living room.
As if I need another game machine...

It might* go ok. Personally I would strongly recomend a clean room install, it is far less likely to cause unusual and difficult to pin down issues later on.

*In the same sense that an upgrade of windows 98-2000 might go ok.

Oh gosh... I wouldn't compare a WinBlows OS overlap upgrade to an Amiga 3.0<>3.1 upgrade et al. That's one of the beauties of the AmigaOS. I say he is just about 100% safe making the upgrade without doing a wipe and fresh install. Of course, if something goes wrong... lol  Kidding aside, there really shouldn't.

There were a few exceptions going from 3.5 to a Boing Bagless 3.9 though, but those were easy to pin down and the 3rd party docs are readily accessible explaining what to do (usually ended up keeping some of the older files).

It's always wise to seek out the latest versions of the important OS software though. Searching Aminet or
the net yields great results.

I did and I'll continue to do so. Upgrading an established install is not a good idea, especially if you already have a large number of hacks/upgrades in that install. I will always recomend cleanroom installs for the simple reason is that it narrows down the list of possible foulups one is likely to face later.

And yes, I've had several AmigaOS upgrades puke on me, almost always due to stuff I'd installed to customise the system beforehand.

Never had problems, 2.1 to 3.0 to 3.1 - but I made a lha'ed copy of the original system files to be safe; nowadays I have everything backed on separate HD.
