I know that the name given the a partition does not make much of a difference. However while trying to install workbench I visited a lot of websites. In these websites I found people giving different names to partitions, such as; DHx, HDx, CFx, CHx, etc where x represents a numeric value. I used the term DHx. However I opened DOpus and it is asking me to insert HD0! So should I have named my partitions using the HDx terminology?

Probably DOpus is configured to load HD0: initially. Just change that configuration.

Thanks but do these terms really do any difference? For example could installer tool by default be set to look for HD0: and can it be changed without having to re-format?

I've always preferred the look of "HDx", myself, but it's nothing more than a preference.  Either will work fine with anything.  You just need to edit a config file now and then.

And, if at worst, you can't edit the config file, just throw the command

c:assign hdx: dhx:

(Or vice-versa, depending on which name you need vs. which name you have...)  Amigas are fine with dirty tricks like that.  You could even do something horrible like

c:assign hd0: dh1:

The system would be fine with that, if you can live with your own non-stop headaches and nightmares.  :lol:

DFx: is your floppy drive
DHx: is logically your hrivesrive

And I agree with Bloodline. DHx: is more logical. Not only that, but many programs (especially older) when installing, look for DHx: only. Sure you can add an assign, but why add more steps?

I've always used HD0-HD1 etc. for harddrives to make it stand out
from the DFx ones, like CDx for CD-ROM's.
But like everyone else says, the pick is yours, u can use just about
anything that makes you feel better
When it comes to DOS and scripts, or DOpus, I often use the logical
disknames, or labels if you prefer like System3: Work: or...
I'm glad that this system, unlike windooze, use the labels equally well!

You can also change from DHx to HDx in HDToolbox without trashing any data. Of course, then you might need an assign statement in the other direction, depending on what you have installed and how it's configured

And if HDx or whatever doesn't exist, Installer won't barf - it'll beep/flash the screen while bringing you to the list of devices as if you had pressed Show Drives. This happens to me fairly often as I don't have a Work: partition (I use A4000T-1:, A4000T-2:, etc).

I never really used a CD-Rom with my Amigas... But DCx: would seem logical... CDx: was used by the PCMCIA slot :-D

I've had an assign in user-startup for hd0 for about 15 years as some stupid installers were hardcoded for it; else dhx numbers as the system suggests - or those oddball names with identification to the disk manufacturer. qdh0, sdh0 etc - wow. First time I wondered something was horribly wrong...
