Question for Peg users?
« on: October 28, 2003, 04:48:16 AM »
Just like to know what the footprint for MorphOS is? Only the OS. Just a simple question. No need for Doomaster to tell me that it ain't a professional operating system. In fact, all the trolls can stay home.  I just want to compare the figures for MorphOS to what I heard awile back for OS4's footprint.

@KapitanKlystron

Do you mean the HD footprint or the RAM footprint?

Sorry guess I wasn't clear.  I meant HD footprint, but any information on memory use is cool too. :-D

@KapitanKlystron

Ok, then the answer is 40MB roughly for the basic install.  However that includes many apps such as Voyager, Kaya, and APDF.

Hummm.  While we're on this subject, how much is the ram footprint?  Not that it matters too much, since when I build mine I intend to get atleast 512mb, but just out of curiosity.

Also, sort of on the same subject, I've already got a MorphOS 1.4 CD.  I assume once the Peg-II motherboards are available, I can order one, plug in a new HD & CD-ROM, and this disk will autoboot & install the OS?  Or do I need some other software to format & partition the HD?

Looking forward to the day...

Regards,
Mike

I heard about users running a Peg with just 64mb.
Mine has about 80mb free (out of 128), which probraly
allready includes space for RAM-debug.

The CD contains all you need, but I'm not 100% certain wether it
will just boot on the Peg2, or if you would need a new one with
updated drivers.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

There is some manual work involved, but it is all very easy, and every tool you will need is enclosed. Have a look here:

http://www.morphos-news.de/beta2help/

This is for the Pegasos 1, but it will most certainly be updated for the Pegasos 2.
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)

Great!  Looks very good!  Like I said, can't wait to try it!   ;-)

Is there a date posted somewhere for the release of the Peg-II motherboards?  I checked with the one company listed as a US distributor,  Ultra Spec Cables, who said it would be about 3 weeks.

(Now if only I hadn't just bought another car - drat! - it's always something - hopefully the next paycheck will cover "my other hobby"  :-D  :-D  :-D )

Oldsmobile_Mike:

I have been using Pegasos 1 with 128MB of ram and it's been my main-system since August. What I have seen is that 128MB is quite enough for normal use. In my case using high resolution screens (1600*1200 truecolor) does eat considerable amounts of memory.. But it's no show stopper and with smaller Res it's not a problem at all.. But on Pegasos 2 I'm getting either 256 or 512M ... :)

For CD size.. I seem to remeber that Mos1.4 CD-image is bit under 40 Megabytes. That contains a lot of contribution stuff like background images, icons, all stuff from Vapor (Voyager is regged, other  ones are demos).

At hard disk... Mos system directory: has about 17megs of stuff. and I could easily get it at least couple megabytes lower cause there are files I don't neet atm like extra TP-dir printer drivers, Datatypes, Grafix drivers for Voodoo/Sis/ Perimedia, Gui Skins.

@Mike

I've run MorphOS with as little as 32MB without even noticing.

MOS will run with less than 32MB. But let's be honest folks, you'll struggle to find a PC100 DIMM less than 64MB these days (and it won't be much cheaper than a 128MB one).

@ KapitanKlystron -

Sorry for all the OT posts, here's some more exact information for you, based on my 1.4 CD:

Capacity used:  37.1Mb

1,523Kb Boot image file
16.8Mb in directory "MorphOS"
13.1Mb in directory "Apps"

The rest of the CD appears to be pretty much Amiga-standard file structure, with assorted files in C, Devs, Utilities, Tools, L, Libs, Locale, S, Docs, etc., even a WBStartup directory  ;-)

Regards,
Mike
