Need disks converted to Win XP format
« on: June 16, 2009, 08:43:57 PM »
Can anyone out there (preferably in Southern Arizona) read my Amiga 1200 diskettes (3-1/2") and convert them to IBM CD's (windows XP pro). I sold my A1200 several years ago, but have some data on diskettes I would dearly love to recover. If so, how much would it cost. I think there are about 10 diskettes.

Hopefully you can find someone local to do the work, but in the event that you can't, you can use a board called the Catweasel (current model is the MK4+) in your PC to create ADF image files of the disks.

You can then use WinUAE to read the images and copy the files therein to somewhere on your hard drive. There's a relatively new utility that might be able to do that directly (ie, without UAE), but I don't recall its name.

EDIT: It's called UAEUNP. There's also a program called ADFRead that doesn't need a Catweasel. They're all at the WinUAE download page.

If you can't find anyone local who can do it and are happy to send overseas, you can post them to me in England. The possibilities for getting the data off the disks are:

1. Converting them to disk images for use in an emulator
2. Extract the contents of the disks

And for getting them back to you:

a. Emailing you the disk images/files
b. Burning them to a CD and posting back to you

If you're not fussed about getting your original disks back and want to save on postage, I would be happy to email the stuff over in whatever format you want and then dispose of the original disks. Alternatively, if you want the files on CD and/or want your original disks back, you can PayPal me the cost of postage back to you.

As Matt suggested, a Catweasel will help in dumping your Amiga diskettes to ADF images on your pc.

Additionally, you can try a tool called ADF Opus (adfopus.sourceforge.net) to extract the Amiga files from your ADF images into Windows folders.

"I sold my A1200 several years ago" seems to be a vital clue in this, people..and getting a CatWeasel just to convert 10 floppies seems excessive =).

The only feasable solution is finding somebody local with an Amiga or sending the disks to someone.

I have a cat installed. I could try if you're willing to ship your disks to Wisconsin.

AND if you don't mind that I sit on them, roll my office chair on top of them and let my dogs use them as chew toys.

No seriously, I am nervous about taking the risk of damaging 20 year old diskettes or being accused of doing so.

If you understand that I take no responsibility whatsoever for your disks then I am willing to help you if you need.

Hi Turtlerock. Please be aware that the disks may have degraded magnetically, and may have lost the data. I believe the Catweasel has a special mode for reading weak disks, so Festers offer may be a good one as long as you understand it may not work ! As long as this is understood, and agreed before you post them, no one will get upset !
