hardware review: omega sound enhancer
« on: June 16, 2009, 04:34:29 AM »
i recently got the omega sound enhancer of ebay uk, more or less out of curiosity if it didnt cost me too much. (see my old post about buying amiga stuff cheap from foriegn countries)

its actually pretty kewl. its definitely not subtle... it will boost the bass and highs a lot --- not in the way that EQ'ing does though... its more of a LP/HP filter sounding thing.

if u turn it up to max, it will get real crunchy in the highs and make it sound sort of somewhere between an amiga and an atari 2600, but with a lot of high end. when u turn it to max it reminds me a lot of that old plugin Steinberg Spectralizer, except the sound enhancer also boosts some bass. it also does some strange limiting or something (audio seemed to limit around -4.1db when recording). when u turn it to around the 10-12 o'clock position is where it sounds best. if you see one cheap grab it, but i wouldn't pay too much for it.

below are 2 sound examples in flac, recorded direct in an echo mia soundcard via protracker, no normalization, channel merging, etc.

bypass = bypassed (no effect)
off = active at lowest setting (7 o'clock)
9.30 = active at ~9:30 o'clock
12 = active at ~12 o'clock
2.30 = active ~2:30 o'clock
max = active all the way up (5 o'clock)

as always, major props + shoutout to leirbag28 for giving me my first soundsampler, and for the replacement 600 mobo - can never thank u enuff, you rox!

Hi systmcrsh,

I'm not familar with the omega, but thanks for the review anyway. I have a 'sound enhancer' as well on my 1200T. (just marked 'high definition audio, Baltimore, MD') You hit on the main prob. with them... the effect is not subtle...at all.....

I just picked up an Aiwa mini-system with built-in sound enhancemnt...  Ugh..... Sounds like everyone's singing in an old metal garbage can.....:roflmao:

Ahh. That brought back memories. I used to have an Omega Sound Enhancer for my A500 in the early 90's. I had a very basic setup back then and I remember the Omega really put some sparkle into my Protracker tunes. :)

Now do you have an OSE 1 or OSE 2?

They are virtually identical externally, but the OSE 2 keeps the bass strong when the filter knob is turned clock-wise. Whereas OSE1 had lots of complaints that the bass all but goes.

metal garbage can :D

there was a paper insert that came with the sound enhancer saying because of bass disappearing complaints, that you could send your unit in for an upgrade to fix it. i assume that i either have a version 2, or that the previous owner sent it in... cuz even when its turned all the way down, it boosts the bass. the further u turn it the more it gets boosted... but the highs get boosted more.

the manual says not to feed any signal other than the amiga thru it cuz you could damage your speakers.... but i have an old roland w-30 sitting here, hrmmm :p

If your speakers are lame ones with no separate base and tweeter drivers you'll be ok.
