FastEthernet.device
« on: June 13, 2009, 10:44:04 PM »
Ok. Let me start for the beginning. I ordered os4 for classic from amigakit (about a week before they lowered the price, but that is a different issue) so I wanted to moved my CyberstormPPC from my 3000T to my 4000D to install the OS. The Cyberstorm and os4 installed flawlessly. My issues began when I attempted to install the 3640 from the 4000 in the 3000T. After playing around with different jumpers I got it booted but would get random crashes which I assoicated with 060 libs still left over from the Cyberstorm. Finally I got tired for trying to track the problem and I started from scratch with a fresh install on a different HD. The current setup is A3000T, 3640, Progressive Perpherals ProRam3000 64Megs, GVP 2000 HC+8, Mediator, Voodoo3, and Ethernet Card.

I started from scratch with a fresh install of os3.1. installed AsimCDFS v3.7, then os3.9 + BB1 and 2. I next installed MMCD and Picasso96, then installed genesis and everything was working fine. Yesterday morning before I left for work I decided to transfer a large batch of files from the PC to the new HD using AmigaExplorer. I came home to a crash. Once I rebooted the system starts fine but I can not get genesis to connect I keep getting iface_init could not open DEVS:networks/FastEthernet.device unit 0.

I checked and Fastethernet.device was definately in Devs:/Networks
I ran PCIinfo and it sees both the Voodoo3 and Realtek ethernet card
I reinstalled Fastethernet from the Mediator CD
I reinstalled Genesis off the os3.9 cd
And still get
iface_init could not open DEVS:networks/FastEthernet.device unit 0 when I try to connect

Any Ideas?

Most of the time it works good, but sometimes it gets corrupted when coping files the HD.

Try to lower the maxtransfer rate to 0x1FE00 and reinstall fastethernet from Mediator CD. Now it should work fine.

Where do I adjust the maxtransfer rate?

HDToolbox -> Partition Drive -> select partition -> Change...

You need to do this once for each partition.

In 3.1 and below you have to enable "Advanced Options"  for "Change..." to become visible. You also have to press enter in each text field you change, otherwise the change will not be taken.

Good values which work on almost every controller are Mask = 0x7fffffff and MaxTransfer = 0x1fe00.

Bye,
Thomas

Ok,

I have reformatted the HD and set up with settings that Thomas has suggested.
Installed os3.1
Installed CDFS
Installed os3.9 + BB1 and 2
Installed MMCD files
Installed Picasso96
Attached settings to voodoo
ran pciinfo and it sees both voodoo card and ethernet card
Installed Genesis of os3.9 CD
and I still get.....iface_init could not open DEVS:networks/FastEthernet.device unit 0 when I try to connect
I then stripped all cards from the 3000T and reseated all of them with no luck

I have used this setup flawlessly for 2 years

I am now wondering if my my ethernet card of voodoo has gone bad on me. Has anyone seen these symptoms?

Installed MMCD files

Do you receive the regular updates from Elbox ? Did you install the latest files ? Perhaps your versions are outdated.

Did you use the Screenmode prefs program to change the Workbench screen mode to Voodoo ? I think that the graphics environment has to be initilized for FastEthernet to work.

It will see them both already after installing the MMCD files. This does not mean that the drivers are installed correctly.

Does it also mention a return code (other than -1 which just means "open failed") ?

You still using AsimCDFS 3.7. The last version is 3.10. Replace your AsimCDFS for CacheCDFS from your OS3.9 CD and try to install your FastEthernet device.

If you do have the same problem, try other CD ROM player.

I had a similar problem with the fastata.device and Genesis. It failed to go online.

I had to run medconfig (included in the fastata driver archive). Medconfig sets a bunch of environment variables.

About the voodoo gfxcard:
Check to tooltype of P96prefs. The boardtype or monitor type (can't remeber the exact name) must be set to voodoo.
If you still have your old P96Settings file,  you can copy it to devs: and forget about P96Prefs.

Thomas,

I have updated files from Elbox but haven't installed them on the current system. I will tranfer them from the pc with pcexplorer via serial tonight and give it a shot.

I will try to adjust screen mode to Voodoo as well when I return home from work

No type of return code

The ethernet was working fine with the old mediator files when I 1st installed. I was transfering a few gig of files and it ran fine for close to 1/2 hour before I left for work. When I returned from work I found the computer crashed. I rebooted and all seemed fine until I tried to start genesis and that is when the problems began.
