New Cooler for CS PPC?
« on: June 04, 2009, 04:32:34 PM »
Hey hardware guru's :) Do you guys think the following cooler is OK for a Cyberstorm PowerPC 200MHz?

http://www.coolermaster.com/products/product.php?language=en&act=detail&tbcate=1&id=3875

It's a northbridge cooler with a fan on top.  Pre-applied thermal tape on the bottom (no need screws or Epoxy).

Specs are:

Universal application for all platformsing
- High efficiency cooler with embedded 40mm super silent blue LED fan
- Its user friendly design allows for easy and quick installation
- User-friendly retention module (Patent pending)
- Increase motherboard activity and stability
- Cool down the surrounding components simultaneously
- Charming small and exquisite outline

I was planning to put this on my Cyberstorm PPC cpu.... any thoughts?

Nice one - but I'd prefer something with ball bearings. Not to say, my CSPPC has an ordinary 486 fan with sleeve bearings.

More reliable with ball bearings? or quieter?

Both. At least when the sleeve bearing gives up...

I think avg. life expectancy is 30,000 hrs on that fan....but i will monitor it closely. I'ts only $9.99 for that cooler and it has thermal tape so new screws ;) i hope it's enough to cool it....

The Blue Fan is 12v. The Original CSPPC Fan uses 5v so you will have to power this Heatsink/Fan Combo from a Molex plug using a convertor to mate with the Blue Fan's 3 Pin Mobo Header.

Also, the original PPC Heatsink is cut specifically to take the 2 x Metal Clips to hold in place with the PPC Chip, so @ best, you will only be able to screw the Blue Fan to the Original PPC Heat Sink unless you machine (Mill) the blue Heat sink to fit! ;)
