IBM 810Mb HDD wont boot. HELP
« on: June 03, 2009, 12:25:13 PM »
Hi guys

Just thought i'd give you a question that is now starting to bug me.

I have recently purchased an IBM 810mb 2.5" HDD from Ebay and it was with intent to use it in the Amiga A1200 i have.

When i first got it i Bought a 3.5 - 2.5" IDE cable with a 3.5"- 2.5" convertor, so in effect i have a 2.5" cable and the red and black power cables i linked with Terminal blocks 3amp.
When the amiga was switched on it denied access to the floppy controller and the whole screen went black and no boot from the floppy. although the HDD light was on. if the cable went any other way the light would go off. and no record of the HDD existed.

So i bought a short amiga 2.5" IDE cable assuming that would sort it out. but It's just the same, the only difference is that the HDD light doesn't come on at all.

Please bare in mind while the HDD is plugged in i have Absolutley no way of formatting through a floppy as i cant load anything up.

If you need any more info please ask.

God speed.

I will post Two pics the first is the HDD setup and the second is the screen when i boot, it may look off but its not.

How long does the HD light stay on for? OS3.1 canl wait for up to 30 seconds or so for a hard disk to spin up.

Also, trying a 2.5 inch cable the "wrong way" round is asking for disaster. The four extra pins in the IDE ribbon are for power/ground.

Thanks for the Reply
It actually works WHOOHOO
It turns out it was the wrong way around. The reason i never put it that way is because it put too much strain on the cable. But i sorted it anyway.

Thanks fellas

Phew, you dodged a bullet by the sound of it. Really, don't use a 2.5 inch cable the wrong way round. You could bake your drive and your machine, or at least the IDE.

Hold on guys the Bullet may be lodged.
I am now up and running and the HDD light stays on for about 30 secs as said and then it goes off and everything carries on as normal. I can hear the HDD working etc......but now the problem is when i start up my work bench 3.1 on the install disk, i cant find it anywhere. It says checksing scsi or somthing but then all options are greyed out.
Its looking like there is no HDD present.Even though i can hear it reading it.
I think this HDD was from an old laptop so i have no idea what is on it.
Someone did say i may have to do a certain thing to format it but im not sure what now.

Once again can you guys shed the light.

Thanks

Have you tried running HDToolbox from your install disks(s) ?

Until it is partitioned, it isn't going to show up on the operating system as a viable drive.

It should appear on scsi.device in HDToolbox. You'll then need to create at least 1 partition, below the 4GB limit (hint, 100MB is more than enough for a Workbench partition) to put the OS on and make sure it is ticked as bootable.

Once you've created the partition and saved the changes, you'll need to reboot from your floppy disk(s) again. The newly created partition should come up as unformatted disk icons on your desktop. You'll need to format them (use quick format unless you like waiting). Once formatted, you can install your OS.

It just says pre partition option
Checking scsi device address 0 unit 0

But i am sure it wont be partitioned for amiga use.

Stay tuned

It's done as much as it fails at the fonts floppy and also i have no DF0 only DF1 as 0's broken and that seems to be causing me problems but also i can't read my CF card when my HD is in place.

BUT I SUPPOSE THAT IS FOR ANOTHER POST.

Thanks
