What kind of drive is it? Plain old SCSI or IDE mechanisms aren't even worth repairing since new ones are a dime a dozen. If it's one of those custom PCMCIA-interface ones, you might have more of a challenge.

Though the pcmcia cd-rom that I had when i opened the case was a standard ide cd-rom with an adpater plugged into the ide port on the back of it that.

Might be worth opening it up and having a look

They're pretty much all standard CD-ROM drives, with adaptors. Whip out your old drive and stick any old new one in and it should be just fine. Might even be able to use a DVD drive. Even a writer if the adaptor is well engineered, maybe!

My external CDRom died recently (PCMCIA interface). To be honest, I have found the NIC I put in there afterwards a lot more useful :)

Sorry, must remember to reduce the abbreviation :)

Network Interface Card/Controller (depending on your preference).

In this case a basic 10Mb network card. Having lost the CD is not much of an issue since I can create a samba share for the CD on another machine and mount it on the amiga over the network.

It's pretty damn handy :)
