AmigaOne uboot and OS4.0 updates
« on: June 02, 2009, 01:18:13 PM »
I was wondering if anybody has links to the latest uboot and OS4.0 updates.  I looked around here but I didn't see any.  Also, when trying to create the update.image to a floppy or the iso to a bootable CD, does anybody have a el torito bootable image or know the settings for TrackDOS?  What's the easiest way to update u-boot?  The instructions were quite vague and I'm not a Linux person and I don't have debian installed.

OS 4.x and UBoot updates can be only found on Hyperion's webpage, you'll need to enter your username and password in order to gain access.
To burn the ISO using MakeCD follow the instructions here, post #24:

Is Burn-it capable of doing it?

If you install OS4.0, do you really need to install Deniab?  Wasn't that just a hold over until 4.0 was released?

I downloaded the uboot update and it has a SLBV2 file.  It says that Starting with version 1.12, slb_v2 requires the new UBoot 1.1.1 released on the
23rd of Feb. 2005.

Please install the slb first and then flash the new firmware.
However, it does not tell you how to update that before you flash the uboot.  Anybody know how to do this or if it is needed.

For the SLB, I think it's the Edit RDB button in Media Toolbox, followed by Install AmigaOne Booter. But if you already have OS4 installed, your SLB is probably newer than that UBoot update.

If you haven't installed OS4 yet, ignore the SLB stuff for now and get UBoot updated. 1.1.1 from March 2005 is the most recent.

I have never used Burn it, but if it has the option to burn from ISO files, then there shouldn't be any problem. There's no need to install Debian in order to install OS4/UBoot, but you might consider installing it if you'd want to use your A1 as your main machine.

I figured out last night what the slb was for after I installed 4.0 and it wouldn't boot off the HD.  I selected the slb in the media tool box, saved changed to HD and it booted.  The easiest way I found to update uboot was use Windows rawrite.exe.  I know I did a taboo thing.  There was a free GUI one for XP and it worked great.  I was just so frustrated.  I tried MakeCD but it didn't like my oktagon scsi board and Yamaha 21xx drive.  I looked all over burn-it and didn't find the capability to burn from an iso file.  You can make ISO and create a file or burn to a cdr.

Thanks for your help I am up and running.  I'll update the uboot to the latest tonight.  4.0 is nice and fast.  If you have OS4.0 can you just buy and upgrade or do you have to buy the full 4.1 for $138 US?

Unfortunately you'll have to buy it for the full price, although the price should include any future update for 4.1, as it was for 4.0.

There's no 4.1 upgrading discount, unfortunately. Glad to hear you're operational.

The fact that there is no update from 4.0 to 4.1 just proves how greedy is the amiga market, and how much money hyperion wants to make by "fishing" into an area of 1500-2000 users that may have an amiga one model. It's terrible and not so profesional option.

Yeah. Hyperion are greedy. I'm pretty sure that even without a discounted upgrade path, they're making quite a hefty loss on the whole OS4.x project so far.

For the price of OS 4.0 we got 6 free updates during 5 years, I think they deserved at that point some money to further fund their efforts.

Oh yeah, I'm sure they're just raking it in. Unless you are planning to buy it, what is the point of complaining?

I don't mind at all supporting the Amiga community.  I look at it this way that the Windows OS is $140 US and usually around $100 US for ugrades from Home to Professional.

One thing I would like to see them is expand on is the Smart Phone  and GPS market and put OS4.1 on a phone like my LG VU.  I'm sure it could do a great job over Windows CE.  If I was Amiga, Inc, I'd get in bed with a PDA manufacturer develop a nice software suite and go after Black Berry market in the US.  They really have no competition.  Palm just bit it.  OS 3.9 or 4.1 on a hand held device would be awesome!
