Amiga Screensavers
« on: October 25, 2003, 02:31:32 PM »
Is it possible to get a screensaver(s) for the Amiga just like for a PC?

Regards,

You can find some on Aminet too IIRC. Take a look. I never use them myself though.

aye they do suck :-) they take up pointless CPU time... Personally I just have mine go to powersave after 30 minutes of no use.... that way if its busy doing something I dont get any stupid screenblankers taking the CPU :-)

If you are running AROS, then you need to set the powersave options in your BIOS to sin down the HD and Switch off the Monitor, etc  after a certain period of time.

The Amiga has no natural Power saving features...

well most screensaver programs you can get for the amiga have a powersave mode, as do programs like MCP and the like. Personally I use a program called YAK, avaliable from aminet... I use YAK because it gives me a digitcal clock on the workbench title bar (and all other pub screens). I also use it to control my wizards, middle mouse button, as well as the click to front function that a commodity does... All in all i find YAK to be a great little proggy and id be lost without it :-)

I personally use the CGXBlanker, which supports the DPMS mode. No need for fancy blanker since I'm running the RC5 client on both CPUs (PPC & 060).

The nicest screensaver I've ever seen is the Acquarium screensaver made by Jim Sachs, a well known artist of the early AMiGA times. Unfortunatelly this is only for M$ & Macs... (maybe we should ask for an AMiGA version?!)

i used to use CGXBlanker, used to have it on random pattern... then I just had it doing DPMS... then I thought... why am i using another program to a job that a program i already run can... so I removed it all together and turned it on in YAK :-)

Sure, with a suitable video setup DPMS is a must.

Some years ago when I used AGA and a scandoubler, I wanted to use DPMS but one software would do it poorly, crashing, others wouldn't do it at all for AGA. So I mostly used a black screen that would appear after first dimming the screen quite a bit. The joys of palette manipulation. :-)

I wonder if there is there a way to do this for any screenmode on all the ATI Radeon cards, some gamma register? But since it's not what it is meant to do, it may not be that flexible. Would be a good way to remind a half-conscious/otherwise lame person to "hit any key" so that the screen doesn't sleep first.
So you have the strings in your palm. Do you know what they are for?

I would suggest you to search for Matrix Screenblankers, they rock! There are 3 on aminet afaik:
http://de.aminet.net/aminetbin/find?matrix

Just try them all out and see which fits you best :)

As all the others all ready stated ... YES.
But personally, i prefer to run the anti-cancer project of grid.org instead of a pointless screensaver.
